Competency Course on Energy Audit 6/28/2022 MPA/Efaraullo 1 LIGHTING SYSTEMS Engr. Robinson S. Uy Energy and Power Services Expert Knowledge & Awareness of: • Concepts and characteristics of lighting design and applications Our Learning Objectives Ability to: • Identify lighting design considerations and applications • Identify energy efficient measures for building lighting 1 2
Competency Course on Energy Audit 6/28/2022 MPA/Efaraullo 2 Audit Considerations Organization: • Policies on design, purchase, use and operations of lighting systems • Organization in charge of policy implementation • Lighting Application – use/purpose, application area, settings/controls, production/operation requirements • Maintenance – requirements, logs, performance trend, incidences, etc. Take note of: • Required standards, guides and practices to ensure efficiency and reliability • Their energy use, impact to operation, finance, and productivity • Identify energy savings measures for lighting systems; opex-capex trade offs for efficiency improvements Lighting Survey ■ Data Collection • Users (people and/or process), lighting purpose, working area and surface, mounting, controls and interface • Walls, ceiling, floor covering and surface coatings • Lighting technology and luminaires ■ Measurements • Lumens, mounting height, room dimensions, light distribution and patterns • Operating hours, electrical parameters and PQ • Potential for daylighting controls and scheduling • Impact of outdoor / sunlight contribution • Special production schedule/operations/ holiday et. al. 3 4
Competency Course on Energy Audit 6/28/2022 MPA/Efaraullo 3 The amount of light that strikes a surface area can be measured with a light meter, in Foot-Candles (Lumens/foot2) or Lux (Lumens/meter2) The lamp type, the fixture, the mounting distance and the working space all impact the performance of the system. Every watt that goes into a lamp will eventually become heat in that fac ility Some technology are much more efficient at producing lumens, like Low Pressure Sodium, but the color is poor. Lighting System Basics Fundamental Types of Lighting by Function ■ General ■ Task ■ Accent Key Take Away: • A good lighting plan combines all three types to light an area, according to function and style. • General Lighting provides an area with overall illumination. 5 6
Competency Course on Energy Audit 6/28/2022 MPA/Efaraullo 4 Lighting Design Application Criteria • Amount of light required - (FC or Lx) • Lumen output of lamps and fixtures’ distribution • Energy efficiency - Efficacy in Lumens/ watt • Color Rendering Index - CRI • Color Temperature - in Kelvins • Visual Comfort Probability - VCP • Types of light sources • Lighting quality • Effective design Illumination Measurement • One Lux is one lumen per square meter, twice that would be two Lux. • Its 0.25 lux at two meters from the source, since the lumen is spread over 4 square meters from that distance, and double that with two. 7 8
