The Yellow Wallpaper By Charlotte Perkins Gilman "The Yellow Wallpaper" is a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman that describes the narrator's depression by following the birth of her child. Significant of the title: “The Yellow Wallpaper" sometimes is referred to as an example of Gothic literature for its treatment of madness and powerlessness. KEY POINTS: The narrator's husband, John, a respected physician, diagnoses her behavior as "hysteria" and prescribes rest. John prohibits the narrator from writing, and she cannot stand to visit her baby. The narrator spends all day sitting in bed, and she begins to see a woman struggling inside the room's yellow wallpaper. Finally, in an effort to release the woman, the narrator tears down the wallpaper. When John comes in, he finds the narrator creeping around the room and faints.

THEMES The main themes in "The Yellow Wallpaper" are the oppressive nature of gender roles, appearance versus reality, and the need for self-expression. The oppressive nature of gender roles: Through the narrator's madness, which seems to result from her inability to assert her full identity, Gilman examines the confining gender roles that were imposed on women of the time. Appearance versus reality: Both major characters are unable to synthesize outward appearances and internal truths, which instigates the story's primary conflict. The need for self-expression: The narrator's struggle to be understood mirrors the universal human desire to share experiences and emotions. SYMBOLIS: She not only reveals her growing sense of discovery and wonder in the wallpaper but asserts her determination to remain its observer. This is the first hint of the isolation derived paranoia that eventually drove her insane. 1. The Yellow Wallpaper" has a lot to explore about roles. Explain. In "The Yellow Wallpaper," the roles of men and women are deeply explored. The narrator is a woman whose husband, John, controls every aspect of her life, including her treatment for mental health. He believes he knows best and doesn't listen to her. This shows how women were often seen as lesser and not trusted to make their own decisions. The narrator's struggle to express herself and her eventual breakdown highlight the harsh limitations placed on women's roles during that time. 2. Explain the symbolic significance of the yellow wallpaper. The yellow wallpaper in the story represents the narrator's feelings of being trapped and her mental struggles. At first, she hates the wallpaper, but as she stays in the room more, she becomes obsessed with it. She starts seeing patterns and shapes that remind her of her own feeling of being stuck and unable to escape. The wallpaper becomes a symbol of her desire to break free from her husband’s control and the limits placed on her by society. Her attempts to tear down the wallpaper show how much she wants to escape and find freedom.
