Có nhiều loại ngữ điệu; tuy nhiên, trong bài học này sẽ nghiên cứu về ngữ điệu với loại câu hỏi lựa chọn. • Câu hỏi lựa chọn (choice questions hay còn gọi là alternative questions) là loại câu hỏi trong đó người hỏi sử dụng liên tử or để đưa ra hai hoặc nhiều hơn hai sự lựa chọn trong câu hỏi. Ex Do you like travelling or shopping?(Bạn thích đi du lịch hay đi mua sắm?) Which is your favorite color, yellow or red?(Màu yêu thích của bạn là vàng hay đỏ?) • Trong câu hỏi lựa chọn, mỗi một sự lựa chọn đều được lên giọng và sau đó xuống giọng ở sự lựa chọn cuối cùng. Khi đáp lại câu hỏi lựa chọn, người trả lời sẽ chọn 1 trong các lựa chọn được đưa ra, hoặc không chọn lựa chọn nào cả nhưng không trả lời câu hỏi bằng Yes hoặc No. Ex A: Do you want to visit the ancient town  or the modern complex? (Bạn muốn đến thăm thị trấn cổ xưa hay khu phức hợp hiện đại.) B: I want to see the ancient town. (Tôi muốn đến thị trấn cổ xưa.) 4. Intonation on tag questions (Ngữ điệu trong câu hỏi đuôi) • Sử dụng ngữ điệu đi xuống trong câu hỏi đuôi khi chúng ta đã biết câu trả lời. Đây không thực sự là một câu hỏi vì người hỏi chỉ muốn hỏi để người nghe đồng tình mới mình. • Sử dụng ngữ điệu đi lên trong câu hỏi đuôi khi chúng ta không biết rõ câu trả lời. Chúng ta thực lòng muốn đặt câu hỏi để hỏi người nghe về thông tin được đưa ra trong mệnh đề trần thuật. Ex You play the piano excellently, don't  you? (Bạn chơi đàn piano thành thạo phải không?) Người nói sử dụng ngữ điệu đi lên vì thực sự muốn hỏi người nghe là có chơi được đàn piano thành thạo hay không. Ex Anna, you have been learning English for years. (Lan, bạn đã học tiếng Anh trong nhiều năm.) You can communicate well in English, can't  you? (Bạn có thể giao tiếp tốt bằng tiếng Anh có phải không?) Người nói sử dụng ngữ điệu đi xuống vì có thể đã biết “Anna có thể giao tiếp thành thạo bằng tiếng Anh." và chỉ muốn xác nhận lại với cô ấy. Ex Andrew: Where should I place this vase of flowers? (Mình nên để lọ hoa này ở đâu?) Kevin: Put it on the table, will  you? (Đặt nó trên bàn có được không?) Kevin dùng ngữ điệu đi lên cho câu hỏi đuôi vì muốn hỏi lại Andrew xem có đồng tình hay phản đối gợi ý là đặt trên bàn hay không. 5. Intonation (Ngữ điệu với lời mới, lời yêu cầu lịch sự…) • Ngữ điệu fall-rise còn được sử dụng trong câu hỏi yêu cầu thông tin, đưa ra gợi ý hoặc lời mời để tạo sự
thân thiện hoặc lịch sự hơn. Ex Is this your camera?. (Đây là máy quay phim của bạn nhỉ?) Ex Would you like another coffee? (Anh uống thêm tách cà phê nữa nhé?) B.
