South Field Farm. How can I help? Girl: I’m phoning about your job advertisement in this week’s newspaper. Man: Yes. We’re looking for a student to be a farm worker during the holidays. Girl: What are the hours? Man: You’ll start at six-thirty am and finish at two p.m. There’s a break for lunch at twelve fifteen. Girl: OK. Are you looking for anything special? Man: You’ll be working with soft fruit, so it’s important that you’re careful and strong – the boxes get heavy. Girl: Is the money good? Man: Our farm workers usually get three hundred and twenty-five pounds a week, but in this job you’ll get three hundred pounds a week. Girl: Why’s that? Man: Because lunch is included. But you do have to pay for your bus tickets. Girl: OK. I’d like the job. What should I do now? Man: You need to send me your details, including your address and phone number, before the tenth of May. The job starts on the twenty-fourth of May. I’ll let you know next week if we need you.
2 Part II: You will hear a conversation between a boy, Carl, and a girl, Susanna, about a school concert and decide whether each of the following statements is True (T) or False (F). (5.0 points) 6. Susanna is coming to play her violin in the school orchestra. T/F 7. Carl and Susanna share the same opinion about practicing their instruments regularly. T/F 8. Susanna's parents refuse to allow her to give up violin lessons. T/F 9. Carl's aim is to have a career in music. T/F 10. Susanna thinks she would enjoy working in another country. T/F TRANSCRIPT Boy: Hi Susanna, I’m just going to the practice for the school concert. Are you coming to play your violin in the school orchestra? Girl: I’m afraid not, Carl. I’m not at all keen on playing in concerts. Boy: You’re not nervous about performing in front of an audience, are you? Girl: It’s not that, but there are lots of other things I’d rather be doing. Boy: But I thought you liked music. You have violin lessons, don’t you? Girl: Yes I do, but I don’t enjoy them. The worst part is having to practise for half an hour every day. I never get any better and it just seems a waste of time. Boy: Oh, I enjoy practising because then I feel that I’m making progress. In fact, playing the piano is a way of escaping from the stress of my school work. Girl: I’d be happy if I could stop my violin lessons, but my parents won’t let me. They say I’ll regret it later, but I don’t agree. It’s not as if I’m going to make music my career like you are. Boy: I’m not good enough to be a professional musician, I’m afraid. And it’s much too uncertain. I’m hoping to be a chemist, like my father – that offers much more security! Girl: I want a good career too, but I don’t want to be a teacher like my parents. Perhaps when I’ve been to university I’ll have more idea of what I want to do. I’ll probably get a job abroad, because I’d really love to travel and see the world. Boy: Well, there’s lots of time to decide. But what about this concert – they really need more violins in the orchestra – won’t you come and join in? Girl: Sorry, you can’t make me change my mind. Boy: Well, that’s a pity – I suppose you won’t want a ticket to the concert either. Girl: You’re right, but I hope it goes well!

Good morning, David. David: Good morning. Well, I visited Waterside last week and I think it has something for everyone and I would recommend it for a day out. It’s taken three years to build and finally opened three weeks ago, two months later than planned. Firstly, getting there; there are organised coach trips from most towns in the area but they leave early and come home very late, so I drove. There are 12,000 free parking spaces, so parking is no problem. You can also get there by train, but the station is 15 minutes from Waterside by bus, and the buses are really crowded so you sometimes have a long wait. Presenter: And what about opening times? David: Well, one thing to remember is that the shops don’t open till 10.00 in the morning except on Saturday when they open at 9.00. So don’t get there too early on a weekday. They close at 8 o’clock every day except Friday when they’re open until 9 pm. Presenter: Can you tell us some more about the facilities at the shopping centre? David: Yes, it’s arranged on three levels. You’ll find all your favourites here. In fact if you want to buy a pair of shoes there are 15 different shops to choose from on levels one and two. When you run out of money there are seven different banks, but collect your money before you get to the third level as there aren’t any
4 banks up there. On that level, however, there are several restaurants as well as a cinema with seven screens. And don’t get lost like I did, go to the information desk on the first level and get a map. Presenter: What else can you do at Waterside? David: Before you go back to your car or the bus – and in fact it might be better to do this before you go shopping and have too much to carry – go and see the late. Take a walk or have a go at fishing, sailing or wind surfing if you have time. Or you can rest your tired feet and watch the birds and ducks, but you are asked not to feed them. Presenter: Was there anything you didn’t like about the shopping centre? David: Oh. Well, although I had a good day I would complain about one thing, but not the usual thing – the service in the shops was good and I had an excellent lunch in a café. No, the silly thing was that everywhere was quite clean but people were dropping their sweet papers and empty drink cans on the ground because there wasn’t anywhere else to throw them. Apart from that I would recommend it. Presenter: And so that’s all for today’s programme … SECTION B: PHONETICS (5 points) Question I.
