( all infinitives) With Correlative Conjunctions Correlative conjunctions ( a conjunction is a word that connects words, phrases, clauses, or sentences) are pairs like either...or, neither...nor, both...and, not only...but also. Incorrect:  She is not only intelligent but hardworking.  Either you start now , you will miss the deadline  Not only did he win the race, but he set a new record. Correct:  She is not only intelligent but also hardworking. ( not only ......but also)  Either you start now or you will miss the deadline.( either .....or)  He not only won the race but also set a new record. ( not only....but also)
In Comparisons When making comparisons, ensure the elements being compared are in the same form. Incorrect:  Running is faster than to walk.  She is smarter and dedicated than her sisters. Correct:  Running is faster than walking. (all gerunds)  She is smarter and more dedicated than her sisters. (superlative degree to show extreme comparison) In parts of speech a noun should be grouped with other nouns, an adjective with other adjectives, an adverb with other adverbs and so on. ● Not parallel: The company is looking for a candidate who is friendly, organized, meticulous, and is going to arrive to work on time. ● Parallel: The company is looking for a candidate who is friendly, organized, meticulous, and punctual.(all adjectives) ● The movie was exciting, thrilling, and suspenseful. ( all adjectives) ● She sang beautifully, danced gracefully, and performed perfectly.( all adverbs) ● Running, swimming, and biking are great forms of exercise. ( all gerunds)
