In 1912, she entered London University. When World War I started, she joined a nurse group and worked in Italy. After the war, she returned to London and went to the school of Oriental Studies. Her studies there became useful during her journeys in the Middle East. These trips enabled her to finally become fluent in Persian, Russian and Turkish. At the age of thirty-three, she travelled to Lebanon in 1927. When she saved enough money, she started learning Arabic. In 1928, she travelled by donkey to Jebel Druze. During another trip, she went to a remote area of the Elburz, where she made a map. She was searching for information about an ancient Muslim group known as the Assassins, which she wrote about in The Valley of the Assassins (1934). This book helped her win the Gold Medal from the Royal Geographic Society.
