Content text EXP2 - Flame Test of Metal Cations.pdf

Far Eastern University | Institute of Arts and Sciences Inorganic and Organic Chemistry Laboratory Experiments 2025 Edition MATERIALS AND REAGENTS * To be brought by the student. APPARATUS REAGENT • Bunsen burner • 50 mL beaker • Test tubes and Test Tube rack • 10 mL Pipette • Match/lighter* • Inoculation loop nichrome wire* • Aspirator* • NaCl, KCl, SrCl2, CaCl2, and BaCl2 solids • Concentrated HCl PROCEDURE In this experiment, you will observe the flame colors emitted by various metal cations to investigate their relationship to electron structure. Place 0.5g of each metal chloride solids into five separate, labeled vials. Also, transfer 5 mL of concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) in a test tube. Clean the inoculating loop wire by dipping it into the concentrated HCl and then holding it in a hot non-luminous flame (blue flame). Repeat this process until the wire no longer produces any color in the flame, ensuring it is free from contaminants. Once the wire is clean, moisten it again with HCl, dip it into the NaCl solid, and immediately place it into the flame. Observe and record the color of the flame, how long the color lasts (in seconds), and the intensity of the flame. Repeat the procedure for cleaning the inoculating loop and then repeat the flame test for each of the remaining metal chlorides. Use the provided wavelength-color table to identify the approximate wavelength corresponding to each observed flame color. Compute for the frequency of the color using the formula c = λ ∙ f .
