Deserts are known for their dry conditions and their lack of plants and animals, but there have been several successful projects to green the desert and bring land back into use, including the following: 1. The Great Green Wall in Africa is an enormous project that aims to plant an 8,000-kilometer-long and 15-kilometer-wide forest strip across the Sahel region of Africa, from Senegal to Djibouti. The project was launched in 2007, and 15 million hectares of trees have been planted to date, providing jobs and food crops for millions of people. 2. The Yatir Forest was planted in the Negev Desert in Israel in the 1960s and has since become the largest new forest in the country. The trees have helped to control the movement of sand and prevent the soil in which food crops grow from blowing away. The area has also become a popular tourist attraction. 3. The Loess Plateau is a region in China that was badly damaged due to deforestation in about the 1 st century CE. In the 1990s, the Chinese government started a huge reforestation and soil conservation project, which has since completely changed the region. 4. In the Al Baydha region of Saudi Arabia, there is an agricultural project that aims to restore poor-quality land. This project is working with areas from 10 hectares to well over 1,000. The project uses sustainable
3 farming practices to improve soil health and to increase the types of plants and animals which can live in the area. These success stories demonstrate that it is possible to green the desert with the right plans and enough money. By investing in sustainable land management and farming practices, we can protect the environment, improve food production, and create new economic opportunities for communities living in desert regions. 25.
