THE DOUBLE COMPARATIVES A. OBJECTIVES: By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to: 1. Knowledge: - Recognise and use double comparatives. - Classify and correctly use double comparative structure. - Practice creating sentences and paragraphs using double comparistives. 2. Competences: - Develop communication skills and creativity. - Be collaborative and supportive in pair work. 3. Personal qualities: - Compare things around you. - Develop self-study skills - Actively join in class activities B. MATERIALS: - Grade 9 textbook, English workbooks and reference books for grade 9. - Computer connected to the Internet - Projector/ TV/ Handout - hoclieu.vn C. PROCEDURE: Teacher’s activities Ss’ activities I. Warm up (3ms) - Greeting - Show Ss a picture of two bowls of spicy noodles. The second bowl of noodles has more chillis than the first one. - Ask Ss which bowl of noodles they prefer. - Put a tick below the first bowl and two ticks below the second bowl and tell them that the number of ticks shows T’s preference. Elicit from Ss a sentence with comparative structure (I like the second bowl more than the first bowl). - Tell Ss that today they are learning another structure of comparison of adjectives. - Introduce the objectives of the lesson. Write the objectives in the left corner of the board. - Greeting - Look at the pictures - Give responses. - Listen and remember II. The Structures * The + short adj/adv + er + S1+ V1… , The + short adj/adv + er + S2+ V2… * The + more adj/adv + S1+ V1… , The + more adj/adv + S2+ V2… Revise types of adjectives/adverbs (Các loại Tính từ/trạng từ) - Short Adj/Adv (Tính từ/trạng từ ngắn): Having one sylable only or two sylables itself ended by y, ow, er, et, le. (Example: tall, heavy, clever, quiet, simple, narrow, fast,…) - Long Adj/Adv (Tính từ/trạng từ ngắn): Having two sylables above (without adjectvies with two sylables itself ended by y, ow, er, et, le. (Example: expensive, interesting, beautiful, quickly, modern, boring, …..) Revise some special comparative adj/adv: Good/well => better, bad/badly => worse, little=>less, many/much=>more, …. Eg1: The hotter it gets, the more tired we are. Eg2: The more carefully he drives, the safer we feel. Note: - Tobe and/or linking verbs (become, get, feel, seem, smell, taste, find, look, sound, hear ): Normally used for double comparative sentences with Adjectives. - Activity Verbs: Normally used for double comparative sentences with Adverbs. Besides, for further practice, we can use double comparatives for noun. The more + Noun + S1 + V1…, The + short adj/adv + er + S2+ V2… The less + Noun + S1 + V1…, The + short adj/adv + er + S2+ V2… The less/more + Noun + S1 + V1…, The less/more + Noun + S2+ V2… Eg1: The harder he works, the more money he can earns. Eg2: The less time you spend watching TV, the heathier your eyes feel. Eg3: The less homework we have, the more free time we have. III. Practice (22 ms) - Hand out exercises to students. - Ask Ss to do exercises on handouts individually. - Call some Ss to write their answers on the board - Get the other Ss to comment and give correct answers. - Recognize right answers then give marks. - Do exercises individually. - Perform the answers on the board. - Correct and write the right answers.
