Why am I sleeping here?” Lane’s expression turned into something worth seeing. His dark brows twisted like he could not believe what he was hearing. Sean got a little scared. Did I screw something up even after that? He finally noticed: Lane was not wearing his usual silver-rimmed glasses. He must have taken them off to sleep, and his hair was mussed from tossing in bed, so his whole face was much more exposed than normal. Meeting those clearly visible blue eyes, Sean was suddenly hit with this overwhelming, ridiculous wave of embarrassment. His eyelids prickled, and it was weirdly hard to hold Lane’s gaze. He knew what this feeling was. He had felt this exact same way that summer in seventh grade, the first time he held a girl’s hand. The simple act of looking her in the eyes had made it feel like he could not breathe, like his whole body had gone stiff with nerves. That feeling like when you are hiding during hide-and-seek and the seeker is just about to find you, that buzzing tension where even breathing too loud seems dangerous. That was how Sean felt right now while looking at Lane. After all these years, it was still just eye contact, the same as always, and yet. “...You seriously don’t remember?” While Sean was quietly drowning in his sudden realization, Lane spoke again, sounding like he could not quite believe it.
