Grammar explanation: (Reference) We use wish and if only to talk about things that we would like to be different in either the present or the past. If only is usually a bit stronger than wish.  ( Chúng ta sử dụng Wish và If only để nói về những điều mà chúng ta muốn thay đổi ở hiện tại hoặc quá khứ. If only thường mạnh hơn mong muốn một chút.) 1. In the present We can use wish/if only + a past form to talk about a present situation we would like to be different.  ( Chúng ta có thể sử dụng Wish /if only + V- dạng quá khứ để nói về tình huống hiện tại mà chúng ta muốn trở nên khác biệt.) I wish I were rich. (But I am poor now). I can’t swim. I wish I could swim. If only she were here. (The fact is that she isn’t here). We wish that we didn’t have to go to class today. (The fact is that we have to go to class today). If only we knew what to do. He wishes he could afford a holiday. 2. In the past : We can use wish/if only + a past perfect form to talk about something we would like to change about the past.  ( Chúng ta có thể sử dụng Wish/if only + V- dạng quá khứ hoàn thành để nói về điều gì đó mà chúng ta muốn thay đổi trong quá khứ.) If only I had gone by taxi. (I didn’t go by taxi). I wish I hadn’t failed my exam last year. (I failed my exam).
