I. LISTENING (4.0 points) Part 1. There are five questions in this part. For each question there are three pictures and a short recording. Choose the correct picture and put a tick (√) in the box below it. You will hear each recording twice. (1.0 point) 1. What time will the flight to Brussels leave? DAUGHTER: Dad, we've just had an email from the airline. DAD: Oh? DAUGHTER: Yeah, the times changed for our flight to Brussels. It's something to do with a new timetable or something. There's only a few minutes difference. We were flying out at 11.57pm, but now it's five past midnight. And the return flight, the following Tuesday, is now at two minutes past midnight. That's a full two hours later than it was. So we might need to change our booking at the airport car park. DAD: Okay. => C 2. What does the man enjoy most about flying?
2 WOMAN: What does the man enjoy most about flying? MAN: Do you enjoy flying? It's not my favourite thing to do. I get a bit nervous sometimes, usually when I'm just getting on board and finding my seat. It's thinking about taking off. I'm not frightened exactly, but I do feel a bit strange, and I'm not keen on that. Landing's the most exciting bit. I think it's because there's usually a new place to explore. When I'm up in the air during the flight, I just find it a bit dull. => C 3. Where will Maggie’s family stay on holiday this year? MAN: Where will Maggie's family stay on holiday this year? Are you taking the family to Italy again on holiday this year, Maggie? WOMAN: Yeah, we were thinking about going back to the same cottage we read last summer, but it's already booked on the dates we wanted to go, unfortunately. The kids really want to go camping. There's a fantastic site in the same area with a pool and everything, but it's not really my thing. So we've reserved a family room at the hotel next door instead. There's a pool there, too, and it'll be much more comfortable, so it's the perfect solution. => B 4. What has the woman left behind? WOMAN: Oh, no! I knew I'd leave something behind. MAN: Don't tell me you haven't got our passports. There isn't enough time for us to go home and come back again. WOMAN: Oh, they're here in my handbag, and we checked in online before we left, so there are no tickets to worry about. It's the guidebooks. I was planning to bring a couple so I could do some reading on the
3 journey. I'm pretty sure I didn't pack them, so they're probably still sitting on my desk. => A 5. What will the weather be like when the plane arrives? WOMAN: Good morning, everyone. This is your captain speaking. We're currently flying at around 10,000 metres and travelling at 650 metres. There's hardly any cloud around and the air is nice and calm, so the rest of the flight should be smooth and much better than the rather windy day we left behind in London. There's a little light rain in Madrid at the moment, but you'll be pleased to know that it should be clear by the time we arrive in about an hour. => B Part 2. You will hear three people, Norman and Linda Hunter; and Linda’s friend Patty, talking in a shopping centre about their children. Listen and choose the best answer A, B or C (1.0 point) 6. How do Patty and Norman know each other? A. They worked together. B. They are old friends. C. They met at a party. 7. What does Norman mean when he calls Patty’s child a “rocket scientist”? A. He is very smart. B. He designs rockets. C. He has a good job. 8. How does Norman feel about young children being encouraged to learn languages? A. He thinks it is easier for younger children. B. He thinks it is essential today. C. He thinks it is unnecessary. 9. What can we guess about Linda’s working schedule? A. She only works occasionally. B. She works a lot of hours. C. She has no time off. 10. What does Norman think is important for children? A. to have a lot of lessons B. to have the latest toys C. to have time to play
4 TRANSCRIPT N = Norman     L = Linda     P = Patty N:   And then have we finished after ‘Smith’s’? L:   Er … we’ve just got to pick up the dry-cleaning and then we’ll still get back in time for the match. P:   Linda! L:   Patty! You’ve met Norman, haven’t you? P:   Oh, yes. We met at the Thomson’s Christmas party last year. N:   Yes, you were telling me all about your young rocket scientist! L:   Oh, yes. How is Stewart getting on? P:   Oh fine, fine. You know the usual. N:   Didn’t sound very usual to me. L:   Norman! He doesn’t mean it. You’ll never guess what! Our Matthew’s started French lessons; he’s only seven and he already knows all the numbers and how to tell the time. P:   Yes, Stewart does French and German – after all, languages are so important these days. And you know, the younger you start … N:   Oh, yes, just what every seven-year-old needs. It never caused me any trouble not knowing three languages. P:   But this is the nineties. In ten years, everyone will need these things and if you don’t invest in his education now, Matthew won’t be thanking you in years to come. L:   And he can teach us about these things at the same time. He was showing me how to play chess on the computer the other night – he’s already got to level three. P:   Oh Linda, you ought to find out about these things. He expects to learn from you, not be your teacher. I did a course at night school just so I could show Stewart the important things – and he’s progressing so fast now that I’ve had to start the night classes again. L:   I could never manage that – what with the hours I work. P:   So you’re still doing six nights a week? L:   I’m afraid so. Still, tomorrow night’s my night off. P:   Poor you! I don’t know how you put up with it. N:   Is your husband still sending you the maintenance cheques every month then? L:   Norman! P:   Actually, he’s my ex-husband now, but he does still send the cheques and he’s even agreed to cover Stewart’s school fees when he goes to Hanborough in six year’s time. L:   Oh, how wonderful! P:   Well, they do have one of the best computer departments which will be so important in his later life.
