Formulary Decision Making:  Drug is compared with the available alternative(s) with respect to safety, cost and efficacy/effectiveness.  Pharmacoeconomic evidence of superiority for new treatments at the time of drug registration is mandatory in some countries.  Literature can be the source for formulary decision based on studies. 2. Treatment Guidelines:  Establishing guidelines starts from the evaluation of the available treatments and their efficacy and safety.  Evaluation occurs when the new treatment demonstrates a better efficacy and safety profile but also a higher cost. 3. Individual Patient Treatment Decision:  Pharmacoeconomic studies may guide clinicians in making CEA choices for specific categories of patients.  Pharmacoeconomic studies are designed to evaluate the costs and benefits for a population of patients responding to a set of general characteristics.  Patient specific factors such as drug allergies, therapeutic failure or lack of insurance coverage can make a cost effective agent a poor choice for an individual patient. 4.
