Ethanol Cooking oil 3. Polarity of the liquids ● Water - Polar ● Oil - Nonpolar ● Alcohol - Polar 4. Answer the following guide questions: a. Which liquid evaporated first, and which one do you think will evaporate last? - We observed the evaporation of a drop of alcohol, water, and oil placed on a coin. Among the three, the alcohol evaporated first due to its low boiling point and weak intermolecular forces, allowing it to transition into gas more quickly. Water evaporated more slowly because of its stronger hydrogen bonding. The oil, having the highest boiling point and the strongest intermolecular forces among the three, will evaporate last.
b. Which liquid holds the most number of drops? - Based on the conducted experiment on the average, water held the most drops of liquid. c. Explain the reason behind the first two answers. - In letter A alcohol transitions to gas quickly because its molecules attract each other weakly, resulting in lower surface tension and boiling point. While oil takes the longest because its molecules are larger and also more cohesive making it more resistant to evaporation. The larger size and stronger intermolecular forces mean it needs more energy to break these bonds and turn into vapor. The water within Letter B has very strong hydrogen bonding, so its own surface tension is much higher. Thus, it is able to contain denser droplets than oil or alcohol.
