PHARMD GURU Page 1 INTRODUCTION:  The central sterile services department (CSSD), also called sterile processing department (SPD), sterile processing, central supply department (CSD), or central supply, is an integrated place in hospitals and other health care facilities that performs sterilization and other actions on medical devices, equipment and consumables.  The essentials of this department are correct design, appropriate equipments, skillful operators and a unidirectional work flow.  Each of these has equipments in place in order to perform specific functions towards sterilization of articles for immediate use in patient care.  All The hospitals should establish an adequate CSSD set-up and adopt strict quality control processes with the latest technology to mitigate hospital acquired infections. DEFINITION:  The central sterile supply department of a hospital has been defined as a centralized unit which provides professional supplies & equipments to all specialized departments.  The specialized departments which are served include all nursing departments, clinicians, certain specialized labs such as cardiac lab (cauterization) and operating rooms.  Single use of items such as syringes, tubes, urine collection sets, I.V administration sets, needles, gloves, blood bags, are dispensed by central sterile supply room.  The CSSD should have four zones : 1) The unclean and washing area, 2) The assembly and packing area, 3) The sterilization area and 4) The sterile area.
