STOOL ROUTINE EXAMINATION
Reference Ranges for examination of stool • Amount : 100-200 grams/day • Colour : Brown • Water : Up to 75% • pH : 7.0-7.5 • Red blood cells: Absent • White blood cells: 1-2 cells/hpf • Epithelial cells : Present • Crystals : Calcium oxalate, triple phosphate
Reference range contd...... • Fats : < 7 grams/day • Fat droplets: Average 2.5 per high power field in random sample • Urobilinogen:50 – 300 mg /24 hrs • Parasites: nil • Ova, cysts , trophozoites : nil
Sample collection • Collected directly or by rectal swab. • It should not be contaminated with urine. • Not to be collected from bed pan. • It should be labelled with the patients name, date, and time of collection of the specimen & proper history.
