Course Title: Metamorphic Petrology & Thermodynamics Week 1 Day 2 Title Career in Geology - 1 Dr. Harel Thomas Professor in Geology Doctor Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, Sagar Sagar (M.P.) 470003 Dear students, I am Dr. Harel Thomas, Professor in Applied Geology, Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, Sagar. Today, in this course, I will deliver my lecture on “Career in Geology”. In this lecture, I will proceed under the following heads; the introduction, Geologist – An Overview, Types of Geologists; Who Hires Geologists, Additional career opportunities, Career options available in India, Latest Career Trends and Geo science Careers in a Changing World. I will cover this topic in three part so that, it will be good for the students to understand the whole topic properly. I believe it will be usuful for you before embarking upon the main topics of the paper i.e. metamorphic petrology and thermodynamics. Introduction Geologists are geoscientists who study the earth's crust to obtain an accurate picture of its structure, composition, and deformation. Geologists play a vital role in exploring the mineral wealth and natural resources. They are the back bone of modern society. Now a day, career in geology is gaining lot more popularity. Main function of the geologists is to assess the natural disasters and its effects on environment to explore areas rich in under-water resources, oil, natural gas and minerals and atomic minerals etc. They can assess whether the conditions in particular areas are suitable for laying construction of roads, railway lines, buildings, bridges and even dam, etc. The geologists can also explore the natural resources deep in the sea. Their services are important for oil explorations and even in defense sector. They determine the quality of soil by conducting geo-chemical and geo-physical tests. Construction of underground tunnels, bridges, reservoirs, roads, etc. is based on the report of the

Geoscientist work for private industries, the federal government, museums, colleges, research lab like DRDO, NGRI and Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology and universities etc. Good job opportunities are available in public and private sectors, non-profit organizations and academic institutions. There are a variety of job settings from mining companies, gas exploration, cement industry, natural resource companies, environmental consulting companies, and civil engineering firms to job roles of teacher, writer, editor, museum curator, or researcher. This chapter discuss about institutions offering education in geology, career prospects in Geology and the skills required by a geologist. Geology is that branch of earth science that deals with the study of the earth, its environment, history, minerals, its structure, compositions, processes and circumstances that have molded its inhabitants, earth history, and evolution of life. Nowadays career in Geology is gaining lot more popularity. Different branches of geology are petrology, structural geology, mineralogy, economic geology, paleontology, geomorphology, geological engineering etc. The geologists play a significant role in discovering and exploring the mineral wealth (ores, coals, and oil etc) and natural resources of the earth. With the recent development in science we have explored many of its secret and still a lot of others need to be unveiled. There are many new developments on the way which needs to be explored to know more about earth. The deep study of earth is known as geology and professionals having expertise in geology are known as Geologists. Career in Geology is an exciting and interesting option as there is plethora of job opportunities in Geology all over India. The people studying geology can work as Geologists, Hydrologist, Meteorologists, Geographers, Geophysicist, Geochemist, Gemologist, or Oceanographers. The person having M.Sc. or M.Tech degree in geology / Applied Geology can pursue a career in Petrology, Paleontology, Geophysics, Mining, Hydrologist, Environmental Education, Research, and Field Study. In India there are good universities and institutes that offer the M.Sc. Geology

Tech Applied Geology degree. These universities and IIT are as follows: Doctor, Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, Sagar, Banaras Hindu University, Delhi University, Jadhavapur University, Calcutta University, Puna university and along with IIT Bombay, ISM Dhanbad, IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur etc. As the geologists held significant role in exploring precious valuable mineral resources, they can get good employment opportunities in public and private sectors. Opportunities in Geology range from studying and predicting man-made and natural disasters to exploring mineral resources. In this lecture we will focus on the career prospects of geology under following topics: Geologist an overview Career options available in India Geo science Careers in a Changing World Geologist – An Overview Education Needed to Become a Geologist: The carrier in the field begins with a Bachelors degree in Geology as B.Sc. Geology Honors or Applied Geology then Masters Degree in Geology or Applied Geology. The best jobs in Geology are mainly available after the Masters level. With the Masters degree one can apply for various Government, Public Sector companies, and Private Geo firms or even pursue the Research stream to earn the Doctorate degree. To become a geologist who works in research and university teaching positions a PhD in Geology or Environmental Science is needed. Geologists must also complete continuing education throughout their careers in order to keep their skills current stay up to date with advancements in the field. Types of Geologists The various types of Geologists and the work they perform are described below in brief: Engineering geologist Advises on site selection using geological maps and aerial photographs, Uses specialized computer software to design structures and provides advice on construction materials and testing of materials etc.
