Focus (1): Commas (1) A comma is used in a sentence to give a short pause. Commas help to make the meaning clearer by separating parts of a sentence. Especially when there are three of more words in a list. Video to assist with the introduction. English Stars Teaching Video: Commas in Lists - YouTube Focus (2) Let’s edit! It is important for children to learn how to edit their own writing. This activity will develop editing skills. Editing is fixing the mistakes in our writing. You can fix grammar, spelling, capitalisation and punctuation. Below is an example to work through with the children. Each sentence is specific to each area of editing. Yesterday I goed to the zoo. We hud alot of fun. first, we seen the tigas. Then, i got a ice cream but i dropd it at the monkey cage Mum said she will buyed me another one i had a wonderful day with my family? Yesterday I went to the zoo. We had a lot of fun. First, we saw the tigers. Then, I got an ice cream but I dropped it at the monkey cage. Mum said she would buy me another one. I had a wonderful day with my family!
The first sentence looks at grammar. Ask: Do my sentences sound right? Did I use verbs and nouns correctly? The second sentence looks at spelling. Ask: Did I spell sight words correctly? Did I use word chunks I know? Did I stretch out every word? The third and fourth sentences look at capitalisation. Ask: Did I capitalise the first word of every sentence? Did I capitalise the names of people and places? Did I capitalise the word ‘I’? Did I make all the other letters lowercase? The fifth and sixth sentences look at punctuation. Ask: Did I put a punctuation mark at the end of every sentence? Do my punctuation marks match the type of sentences I wrote? Focus (3): Let’s get our thinking caps on! Set a timer for 40 seconds (recommended) or choose a time you wish to spend on each quick think activity. Time should not exceed 2 minutes per topic. Ask students to write as much as they can about the topics in their writing books. Today’s Quick Writes • If you could wish for anything in the world, what would it be? How would you feel if you received it? • Describe this picture using adjectives in sentences. (5 sentences) Think about the shape, size, colouring, special features • What do you think the characters are saying in this picture? Focus (4): Feelings and Emotions / Synonyms Challenge The list below includes some words that students may find useful for this week’s writing topic. Ask students whether they know the meaning of any of these words. When necessary, explain the meaning of these words. Call on students to try to use these words in sentences.
Focus (5): This week’s writing task – Creative Story Writing prompts are a great way to spark the imagination and encourage the child to have something to write about. Using the story map will establish healthy writing habits of brainstorming and help the child organise their ideas. Writing a draft in their draft book encourages children to begin the important process of self- editing their writing. Then their final copy is presented to the teacher. The final copy is the writing piece that the child should be most proud of.
