Page 2 of 15 1 Money and Financial Mathematics Note: The content in 1.1 to 1.3 below are for basic student reference & for quick revision as this content should be known already. 1.1 Basic Operations with Decimal currency The currency in Australia and many countries is based on the decimal system. The 4 operations, +,-,× and ÷ apply also to money. Dollars are placed in the whole number columns and cents in the hundredths column. A. Adding and subtracting Money. When adding or subtracting money, apply the same rules as adding and subtracting decimals. Place the decimal point under the decimal point. Adding. Example 1. $8.32 + $15.49 + $6.07 + $27.36 2 1 2 $ 8.32 $15.49 $ 6.07 $ 27.36 + $ 57.24 Example 2. $7.31 +$8 + $16.92 + 5c 2 1 $ 7.31 $ 8.00 $ 16.92 $ 0.05 + $ 32.28
Page 3 of 15 Subtracting. Example Subtract $53.39 from $72.65 6 12 5 15 $72.65 Take 9 from 15 (=6) $53.39 Take 3 from 5 (=2). $ 19.26 Take 3 from 12 (=9) and 5 from 6 (=1). B. Multiplying and dividing decimals. Multiplying Example. One packet of Wheatbiscuits costs $4.90, how much do 4 packets cost? Multiply $4.90 by 4 $4.90 2 decimal point × 4 0 decimal points $19.60 2 decimal point Move 2 places left 1. $4.9 1 decimal point 2. × 4 0 decimal 3. $19.6 1 decimal point 4. Move 1 place left 5. And add 0 $19.60 Dividing. Same rules with money problems. Place the decimal point in the answer directly above the point of the given decimal question. Example: If 6 special cups cost $81.30 to make, how much does it cost to make one cup. Divide $81.30 by 6.
Page 4 of 15 $ 13.55 6) 81.3 6 21 18 3.3 3.0 0.30 0.30 0 So the cost of one special cup is $13.55 Example 2. $9.48 ÷ 4 $ . )$ . 8 14 12 28 28 0 1.2 Rounding All rounding rules apply just as per usual. Eg $247.49 Rounded to nearest dollar: $247 Rounded to nearest ten dollar: $250 Rounded to nearest hundred dollar: $200 Rounded to nearest thousand dollar: $0 Rounding to nearest 5 cents The smallest coin denomination that we have in Australia is the 5c coin. There are no 1c or 2c coins anymore. Therefore,
