The question paper will be distributed 15 minutes prior to the commencement of the examination. The students will read the question paper only and will not write any answer on the answer script during this period. ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE (Code No. 184) CLASS-X Time allowed: 3 Hrs. Maximum Marks: 80 General Instructions: 1. The Question Paper contains THREE sections-READING, GRAMMAR & WRITING and LITERATURE. 2. Attempt questions based on specific instructions for each part. SECTION A : READING SKILLS (20 marks) Reading Comprehension Through Unseen Passages 1. Read the following text. 10 m (1) It is rare to find someone with good technical and communication skills. You can get far ahead of your colleagues if you combine the two early in your career. People will judge, evaluate, promote or block you based on your communication skills. Since habits form by repeating both good and bad forms of communication, learn to observe great communicators and adopt their styles and traits4in written and verbal forms. The art of listening and learning from each and every interaction, is another secret recipe. Develop the subconscious habit of listening to yourself as you speak and know when to pause. (2) Learning what not to say is probably more important than learning what to say. As your career develops, you will realise that the wise speak less. Speak when you have value to add, else refrain. Poorly constructed emails with grammatical errors are acceptable between friends, but they should be seriously avoided while communicating formally with your seniors. Avoid any communication in an emotional state when you might say things you will regret later. One unnecessary word uttered at the wrong time or place can ruin a relationship, career or even your life. Such is the power of words. If such a thing happens, you should immediately apologise, else it may haunt you for life. (3) Another problem to overcome is speaking too fast. Since our minds work faster than our speech, we are inclined to speak fast. This does not necessarily mean that the person hearing it will get it any faster. But realise that not all jokes are funny and observe certain boundaries. Never say anything that could offend. Remember you are not a comedian who must offend as many people as you can to be witty. Read the following text. 10 m (1) Geographically Odisha is a disaster prone state. If we will analyze the History of occurrence of disaster in Odisha then it can be better analysed that every year disaster beats Odisha in many ways. Apart from severe kind of natural disaster, every year Odisha is subjected to other natural disasters such as Sun Strokes, Heat waves, Lightning , Whirl wind, Heavy rain, Boat accident, Tornado etc. These calamities not only create huge losses of lives and damages of properties, but also severely influenced the social, cultural and economic development of the human beings. Continuous occurrence of these disasters destroys the livelihoods of small and marginal farmers, agricultural labourers, village artisans and poor by making them vulnerable. (2) Due to the prompt and timely action, proper planning and management for post disaster relief measures, rescue and rehabilitation measures, now Odisha has been recognised as a pioneer state all over the world in the field of PA- II/SUBJECT (ENG) –X/SET-I 3 of 11 (3) Odisha has been recognised as a role model in the country, for its excellent disaster management techniques to tackle different natural calamities like devastating flood, Phailin, Hudhud, cyclone, drought etc. in a successful manner. (4) After experiencing the devastation of super cyclone, the state Govt. has emphasised the participatory planning/measures to minimize the havoc of disaster and to build Odisha as a disaster resilient state in the country.
