Welcome Letter Welcome to the National Integration Council(NIC)! This year, delegates of the NIC will dive into the topic of The Integration of Diaspora Communities in Singapore. As a nation built on diversity, Singapore faces the task of maintaining the delicate balance of its social fabric. The integration of diaspora communities plays an integral role in maintaining this balance. This process requires great sensitivity as we navigate the complexities of effective integration, while fostering the coexistence of different cultural groups in a globalised world. Traditionally, ‘Diaspora’ have been characterised as transient migrants/foreigners who were originally “dispersed” from their homeland but maintain cultural ties with it whereas ‘Foreigner’ simply refers to someone who is not a citizen or national of a particular country. Yet today, these terms overlap, making the idea of integration more nuanced. Why do diaspora maintain cultural ties with their homeland, and how does this affect their integration into their host society? To what extent should integration efforts seek to accommodate or overcome these cultural connections? As delegates explore these questions, they will gain a deeper and more nuanced understanding on what it truly means to build a cohesive, multicultural society that celebrates diversity while ensuring unity. Regards, Dais of the National Integration Council OPMUN 2025 Chair Introduction Goh Si Xuan Heidi (Head Chair)
