While one school of thought holds that schools should sort out students based on their academic/ learning levels, others are of the opinion that it would be more beneficial to have students of varied studying levels studying together. This essay will first examine both views before concluding that I agree with the latter. On the one hand, it is understandable why some people advocate the idea of selecting students according to their academic performance. The primary reason is that teachers can design and deliver lessons tailored to a specific learning level. For example, in a class where students are high performers, teachers might delve deeper into theories and concepts, thereby promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills at an advanced level. In contrast, students struggling academically can benefit more from foundational instruction, which ensures that they comprehend/ grasp the basics. Advocates of academic selection might also add that it can boost student confidence, as students are placed in environments where they can frequently excel or where they receive the support they need. However, I side with those who say that it would be more prudent / politic to group students of different academic abilities together. Perhaps the foremost reason would be that this model mirrors the real world, preparing students for the diverse society they will join one day. In such a setting, students are taught that everyone has unique strengths and weaknesses, and they learn to appreciate diversity in thought and approach. This can instill in them a sense of tolerance, empathy, and mutual respect. In addition to this, grouping students together can promote peer teaching, with stronger students helping explain difficult, complex concepts and theories for their fellow classmates.
