OBJECTIVE: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to gain the following things : 1. Knowledge: - Listen for main ideas and specific information about traffic problems in Mumbai. + Write about traffic problems in your area. + Vocabulary: Use the words related to the topic Traffic; means of transport . + New words: pedestrian (n), passenger (n), (to) obey , seatbelt (n). - Asking and answering questions about means of transport - pronounce the sounds /ai/ and /ei/ correctly; + Grammar: - Use it to indicate distance; Use should/shouldn't, 2. Competence: - Develop communication skills - Be cooperative and supportive in pair work and teamwork. 3. Qualities: - Develop awareness of travelling in town/city - Be concerned to the local traffic. - Develop self-study skills. II. WARM UP & INTRODUCTION ( 5’) Aim: To activate Ss’ knowledge of the topic of the listening text. * Content: Having some warm-up activities to create a friendly and relaxed atmosphere to inspire Ss to warm up to the new lesson . * Outcome: Having a chance to speak English and focus on the new lesson. * Organisation : Teacher’s instructions…. PRESENTATION/ NEW LESSON (10’) ACTIVITY 1: Pre-listening Aim: To activate Ss' knowledge of the topic of the listening text (traffic problems). * Content: Look at the picture and aak and answer the questions. * Outcome: Ss answer the questions . * Organisation : Teacher’s instructions…. Teacher’s & Student’s activities Content 1. What can you see in this picture? What is special about it? *) Pre- teach vocabulary: - Teacher uses different techniques to teach vocabulary (situation, realia, translation .....) if have - Ss work in pairs. They study the picture and answer the two questions. - Encourage Ss to talk as much as possible. Whether their sentences are true or not is not very important as long as they speak in English. Example: - can see a lot of vehicles on the road. - I can see a serious traffic jam. - I can see that some drivers don't obey traffic laws/rules. - I can see that it's very dangerous. - T checks their answers... 1. While-listening/ (10’-12’) ACTIVITY 2 : Aim: To help Ss practise listening for the main idea / general information. * Content: Listen to an interview and choose the correct answers A, B, or C * Outcome: Ss listen and choose the correct answers A, B, or C correctly. * Organisation : Teacher’s & Student’s activities Content 2. Listen to the recording and choose the correct answer A, B, or C - Ask Ss to read the instructions of the activity to identify how to do the task. 2. Have Ss read the sentences and guess the option (A, B, or C) that can be used to complete the sentences. - Play the recording once or twice, if necessary, for Ss to listen and circle the appropriate option to complete each sentence. - Have Ss compare the answers in pairs or groups. Listen again and write ONE word or number in each gap. - Tell Ss that they are going to listen to a passage about traffic problems in Mumbai, India. - Have Ss read through the sentences first. Ask them to guess the word / number to fill in each gap and write down their guesses. - Play the recording once or twice. Ask Ss to listen carefully and write down the correct answers. - Play the recording once more for Ss to check their answers *Post-listening: Retelling - Teacher invites some students to retell it briefly if possible. - Teacher confirms the correct answers - Call on some Ss to talk freely. - Correct pronunciations, grammar, vocab, intonation. - Lead to the writing part. 3. Mumbai in India is one of them. Mumbai is one of the most congested cities in the world. Traffic jams happen nearly every day, so drivers have to spend a lot of time on the road. There are several reasons for traffic jams in this city. One reason is its increase in population. With nearly 20 million, Mumbai has too many people on the road. Another reason is that the roads in Mumbai are narrow, and many are not in good condition. Also, many road users do not obey the traffic rules. As a result, this problem is getting worse and worse.
ACTIVITY 4: Writing Aim: To help Ss write a paragraph about the traffic problems in their town / city or a city they know. * Content: Read and tick (✓) the traffic problems in big cities in Viet Nam. * Outcome: Ss can tick (✓) the traffic problems in big cities in Viet Nam. * Organisation : Teacher’s & Student’s activities Content 4. Write a paragraph of about 70 words about the traffic problems in your town / city. Use the cues above, and the following outline: - Tell Ss to read the sentences they have written in 4. - Have them study the outline. - Ss practise writing a paragraph. Tell them to use proper connectors [first / firstly, second/ secondly, etc.), and pay attention to grammar, 5. Write a paragraph of about 70 words about the traffic problems in your town / city.
