Content text The Origin Story of Barangay San Andres.docx

In its early years, the Barangay San Andres was named Sinungduran. This was an area encircled by lush forests and high trees until it was made an official barangay in 1959. Under their shadow, the early settlers lived—fishing, cultivating the soil, and living in harmony with nature to the extreme. I. Introduction Barangay San Andres, previously Sinungduran, is a story of people's harmony, religion, and nature. The "forced together" name itself originated from some prehistorical legend of two serpent-like creatures as large as trees that battled very hard until even the ground itself protested. This prehistoric legend bears witness to the harmony and strength of people who once lived in between the rivers and forests of Pandan, Catanduanes. Before it was declared a barangay in 1959, San Andres was a peaceful town whose residents lived by tilling the land and fishing. The municipality grew and prospered with time with the guidance of men visionary and imbued with bayanihan spirit like Apolinario Dela Cruz and Faustino Briones, whose vision and bayanihan spirit guided the people to progress. II. Core Findings Historical Origin 1. Background: The municipality was first known as Sinungduran from the Tagalog word which is "collided" or "forced together" in reference to a myth of two gigantic snakes wrestled and rent the earth asunder. It was later named San Andres in 1959 when it was converted into a barangay, as a mark of respect to its patron saint, San Andres Apostol. 2. Early Settlement: Sinungduran was initially settled by dense forests, and the early settlers only lived fishing and farming. 3. Livelihood: Livelihood was dependent on fishing, hunting, and farming. Human beings were highly respectful of nature and also used to pray first before cutting trees or plowing fields. 4. Belief regarding Culture: People believed that the seas and forest are guarded by spirits. Such belief had planted in them nature conservation behavior and modest and respectful way of living.
5. Legendary Importance: Two giants snakes legend and the prophecy of the old woman are still an identity of the barangay, reminding everyone of loyalty, courage, and friendship. III. Q&A Questions / Interview 1. Puede nyo po na ko ibasay kung paano nag umpili ko atong barangay at sino ang mga una na nagistar rito, sa pagkakaaram nyo po. 2. Siin po hari u pangaran ning atong barangay buda ano u ibig sabihon ninto? 3. Ung mga kapanahunan, inano pa po dito sa atong barangay like ung mga kabarayan buda pamumuhay ning taho inano man? 4. These questions aimed to collect information about the barangay’s origin, customs, and major changes from the past to the present. IV. Narrative Report Introduction I interviewed elderly participants in Barangay San Andres in order to learn about its history and culture. The interview was done to learn where the barangay came from, what Sinungduran is, how life used to be like, and how it changed over time. Key Findings 1.
