Judy: Yes, thank you. I’m looking forward to welcoming all your listeners to the new sports centre. It was due to open last week on 5th May but we had a problem with the roof so it’s actually opening on 12th May. So I do hope as many people as possible will come and join and also come to our party on Saturday 14th May. That will be from two in the afternoon. It’s not on the same site as the old sports centre which was next to the supermarket. The new one is on the other side of the road from the station. There used to be a hotel there. There’s a large car park if you want to drive there. The entrance to the car park is down a small side road – Fortescue Road. That’s F-O-R-T-E-S-C-U-E. Please don’t try to park in the road or outside the centre. You can pay for membership for a week, a month or a year. For a year’s
2 membership it costs £450, monthly membership is £40 and if you pay weekly it will cost you £9.50. So you save money by paying for a whole year. You need to wear trainers and suitable clothes but you don’t need to bring a towel. That saves carrying a huge bag around with you. We are very lucky to have Sonia Smith joining us, who is going to give dance classes daily at 5.30. Check on our website to get more information about that. We will also have exercise and yoga classes but those times aren’t decided yet. So that’s all I have to say for the moment. I look forward to ... Part 2. I’m calling to find out more information about your program. For example, what kind of courses do you offer? Receptionist: Well, first of all, the purpose of our program is to provide language learning opportunities to this area’s community [Uh-hum], whether a student’s goal is to master basic functional language skills, let’s say, for his or her job, or to study intensively to enter a US college or university (1). Caller: Okay. I’m calling for a friend who is interested in attending a US university. Receptionist: And that’s the kind of, uh, instruction that we provide, from basic communication courses to content-based classes such as computer literacy, intercultural communication, and business English (2). Caller: Great. What are your application deadlines for the next semester?
3 Receptionist: Well, we ask applicants to apply no later than two months before the semester begins (3). [Uh- hum] This gives us time to process the application and issue the student’s I-20. Caller: An I-20? Receptionist: Oh, an I-20 is a form that indicates that we are giving permission for the student to study in our program, and then the student takes this form to the US embassy in his or her country to apply for the F- 1 student visa. Caller: Alright. What is the tuition for a full-time student? Receptionist: It’s two thousand thirty dollars (4). Caller: And how does one apply? Receptionist: Well, we can send you an application, and you can mail it that to us, or you can fill out our application that’s online at our website. Caller: And are there other materials I would need to send in addition to the application form? Receptionist: Uh, yes. You would need to send in a $35 non-refundable application fee [Uh-huh], a sponsorship form indicating who will be responsible financially for the student while studying in our program, and a bank statement showing that you or your sponsor has sufficient funds to cover tuition expenses and living costs for the entire year of study (5). Caller: And how can I send these materials to you? Receptionist: You can either send the application packet by regular mail or you can fax it. Caller: And the application fee? Receptionist: We accept money orders, travelers checks, or credit cards. Caller: Alright. I think that’s about it. Receptionist: Okay great. Caller: Oh and what is your name? Receptionist: Ok. My name is Tony Nelson. You can just call and ask for me. Caller: Great. Thank you for your help. Receptionist: No problem and please don’t hesitate to call again if you have any other questions. 4 TRANSCRIPT Andrew’s Sister: Hey, Andrew! An . . . ? Andrew. [ What? ] Andrew. Andrew: What? What’s wrong? Andrew’s Sister: What happened to YOU? Andrew: You mean my hair? You like my hair? Andrew’s Sister: Uh, I think you know what I mean, Andrew. Do you want me to be honest? [ What? ] Okay. Andrew. You’ve put on, like, a ton of weight since I saw you at Christmas time. What on earth happened to you? Andrew: Why are you so blunt? Andrew’s Sister: Well, I’m your big sister (1). I’m your, I’m  . . . what am I? Three years older than you, and I can be blunt if I want. Besides, you used to say stuff like that to me all of the time. You used to call me fatso all the time when I was little. Andrew: Oh, yeah, well, to be honest, uh . . .  I started changing my life . . . . yesterday. [ Oh good! ] I’m on the Wafu Diet. Andrew’s Sister: What? The . . . I’ve never even heard of the Wafu Diet. What is that? Andrew: Ah, it’s too difficult to explain. I found information about it in my junk mail the other day (2). . . Andrew’s Sister: What? So, first of all, smaller portions [ Okay. ] Then, you need to make sure you eat a good, well-balanced breakfast [Oh, I . . .] first thing in the morning [ I do that. ] and then you follow that up with smaller meals throughout the day, cause, you
