Learning EARLY STEPS ACADEMY | Making global leaders of tomorrow SNEHA BISWAS

Early Steps Confidential | 4 Due to threat of bombing, many cities were evacuated. This led to learning of children in these places getting stalled. In addition, many young male teachers joined the war leading to shortage of teachers. When schools were destroyed in the war, children gathered in village halls, churches and warehouses to try to continue their education. As Dr. Anne got up to put her cup away in the kitchen, she looked at her father’s photo which was on her TV cabinet. Her father had served in the US Navy during World War II and had shared with her multiple stories about the war. Her dad was exposed to a lot of loud noises and thuds while at war and as he aged, he lost his ability to hear. Lessons from wars, pandemics and times of crisis teach leaders to prepare better for future. Image: Children wearing gas masks in 1940 Back in 2020, Dr. Anne had no option but to pause the learning for many children in the US, and around the world during Covid-19 by ordering to close down schools. However, she also realized that had she not learnt from the history of similar crises in the form of pandemics and wars, she might not have been able to make such a quick decision this time. Her quick decision-making helped save many lives and slowed down the spread of the virus. Moving to remote and online learning was a good option, however, there were many people around the world who did not have access to the internet and they suffered huge learning losses. Several teachers were not comfortable with teaching online back then and this impacted the quality of learning as well. Dr. Anne removed her glasses, rubbed her forehead, and took a deep sigh of relief, as she thought of young Hannah who was going to school this morning. Learning had once again resumed for everyone. Is knowing history important in making big decisions for the future? If no one in the world today knew about the World Wars, what would be different?
