Through the Lens EARLY STEPS ACADEMY | Making global leaders of tomorrow SNEHA BISWAS
Early Steps Confidential | 2 It was January 2022 and Trent Opaloch was cleaning the lens on his personal camera. He looked into the camera lens and thought about the first time that his father had handed him a video camera. Now, many years later, Trent was a world famous cinematographer (a person who is responsible for recording films or movies). Trent worked with Marvel - the famous American company that published comic books (Marvel comics) and made movies. Marvel had made several popular movies which Trent himself had worked on such as Avengers : Infinity War, Avengers : Endgame, Captain America : Winter Soldier, etc. As he looked into his reflection in the camera lens, he wondered calmly about how the world went from simple hand-held home cameras to the robotic and extremely high-tech cameras that he used in his films. more than that. He is also credited with the invention of the motion picture camera, which is also called a movie camera. Motion picture means a series of moving pictures which feels like a continuous video, also referred to as a movie or film. Edison’s laboratory invented the Kinetograph (the first motion picture camera) and thereby provided the world with the means to create one of the greatest forms of enjoyment - movies. The motion picture camera or simply, a movie camera, takes multiple pictures one after another and puts them all together at a certain speed such that it seems like the images are moving. This technology is used in modern day cameras as well. Thomas Alva Edison Thomas Alva Edison was an American inventor, best known for his invention of the electric light bulb. Edison, however, did Left: Thomas Edison; Right: The Kinetograph On 10 December, 1914, a large explosion occurred in West Orange, New Jersey, USA, burning down more than half of Edison’s factory (about 10 buildings) . At this time, Edison told his son Charles, with a childlike excitement: "Go get your mother and all her friends. They'll never see a fire like this again." When Charles objected, Edison simply said, "It's all right”. He told the journalists that day, “Although I am over 67 years old, I'll start all over again tomorrow." He stuck to his words and immediately began rebuilding the next morning, without firing any of his employees. Thomas Edison's reaction to his life’s work burning down showed his capacity to face failure, and to stick through the good and bad times. His ability to face failures is what made him so successful.
Early Steps Confidential | 3 The invention of the first motion picture camera, or the Kinetograph, was pivotal to the development of future technology which led to the advent of complex cameras that are used in modern day movie making. Improvements made on the first motion picture camera moved the movie industry from silent films (movies that have no sound) to action movies (like the Marvel movies that Trent worked on). Edison was lucky enough to see his inventions become a success. He died in 1930, just after motion pictures began to have sound. Rapid advancements were made in technology and by early 1950s, Hollywood had started producing colored movies. Inventions One single invention powered many others, thus leading to vast improvements in the quality of entertainment being produced. It was not so long ago that CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) had arrived and wowed audiences, but by 2022, the world had moved to real-life-like experiences with 3D (3 Dimensional) movies. 3D movies were different from ordinary 2D movies where one could only see a flat image on screen. In 3D, people could feel “depth” i.e. it seemed that objects came out at them from the screen. CGI or Computer Generated Imagery, as the name suggests, were special visual effects created by using computer software. Marvel movies used a lot of CGI. Trent had heard of a new camera DJI Ronin 4D that was actually 4D. 4D (4 dimensional) meant adding another dimension (the extra “D”) to the experience which was related to “Motion”. 4D movies enabled viewers to have a more real experience by adding systems where viewers can also feel every motion in the film. Everyone was hyped up about the latest DJI Ronin 4D camera as it could supposedly shoot action scenes much better than ordinary cameras. Before CGI and after CGI in a Marvel movie Action scene from Avengers : Infinity War which Trent had worked on. Wow! ● The first motion picture was shot in 1888, when the French inventor Louis Le Prince made a 2-second clip of his family. ● During silent movies, a band would play live music so that the audience wouldn’t get bored. ● The Marvel Studios are now under the Walt Disney Company - the company that made Mickey Mouse!

How did technology improve so rapidly? If it wasn’t for the Kinetograph would we have movie cameras today? Action scenes included running, fighting, jumping, and many such engaging motion effects. Trent wondered if it was a good idea for him to test out the DJI Ronin 4D in one of his new movies. As Trent kept his camera aside, he thought about how inventions throughout history had helped move the world forward. Human beings had progressed because of their ability to think and continuously build new technology while learning from past inventions. Humans even aspired to go to Mars but this would not have been possible without the continuous series of inventions throughout history. A DJI Ronin 4D Trent thought about Edison and wondered if it weren’t for Edison, would he even be a cinematographer? Smiling, he thought about his school days when he hated “History” as a subject. As he had grown older, he had realized how important it was to know about the past. Trent shook his head and quietly put his cameras back into their bags. Those that innovate the future understand history the best - Rick Warren, American Author
