WRITING TASK 1
The line graphs describe the changes in ownership of three types of electrical appliances (washing machines, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners) and the hours per week spent doing housework in households of a particular country from 1920 to 2019. Overall, the percentages of households with the three types of appliances fluctuated with an upward trend while the number of hours spent on chores shrank considerably in the surveyed period. In 1920, the percentage of households that owned washing machines was the highest, at 40%, approximately eight times greater than that of refrigerators at slightly below 5%. In the next six decades, refrigerators’ ownership percentage grew remarkably, exceeding both washing machines and vacuum cleaners to become the most popular appliance, with every family possessing one from 1980 onward. Similarly, vacuum cleaners’ figure peaked at 100% in 2000. The second chart shows that the amount of time spent on washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning in this country’s houses experienced
a significant decline by five times from 50 hours to just above 10 hours per week from 1920 to 2019. (177 words - 20 mins)
