Watershed Management (BCV405D) BLDEACET, Vijayapur. CSM 1 Module - 3: Conservation of Water & Water Harvesting Conservation of water: Water Conservation is the practice of efficiently preserving, controlling and managing water resources. Conservation of water mainly refers to protect, preserve, and control the usage of water and its resources. It is the system introduced to manage freshwater, reduce the wastage and protect the water and its resources in order to reduce and to avoid the scarcity. Main reasons to conserve water:  Conserving water saves energy. Energy is important to filter, heat, and pump water to your home, so lessening your water use likewise decreases your carbon traces.  Consuming less water keeps more in our environments and aids with keeping wetland habitats best for creatures like otters, water voles, herons, and fish. This is particularly significant during dry season periods.  Conserving water can save you money. If you have water meter, the less water you use, the less your water company might charge you. GOALS: The goals of water conservation efforts include:  Sustainability- To ensure availability for future generations, the withdrawal of fresh water from an ecosystem should not exceed its natural replacement rate.  Energy conservation- Water pumping, delivery, and wastewater treatment facilities consume a significant amount of energy. In some regions (e.g. California) of the world over 15% of total electricity consumption is devoted to water management.  Habitat conservation- Minimizing human water use helps to preserve fresh water habitats for local wildlife and migrating waterfowl, as well as reducing the need to build new dams and other water diversion infrastructure. Why and How of Water Conservation? Using the limited water supply wisely and caring for it properly are just a few of the many keys to conserving water. Remember that we have limited availability of water supply. This means that we do not have an endless amount of water. Remember that we must understand and learn more about water conservation. Even so, find ways to help keep the resources pure
Watershed Management (BCV405D) BLDEACET, Vijayapur. CSM 2 and safe for the coming generations. Saving Water Saves Energy: Much energy is required to treat water and supply it to your home - the same as a tremendous amount of water expected to cool the power plants that produce electricity. Home heating water for showers, shaving, cooking, and cleaning likewise uses a lot of energy. That is why it's imperative to recollect to save energy and water in your home. We tend to have longer, hotter showers as the climate gets colder. You can spare energy and water by placing a water-efficient shower and lessening the time spent in the shower. One of the best ways to save energy across the region and in your house is to use water more effectively. Saving Water Saves Money: Using less water makes your money in your pocket. You may be able to save thousands of gallons of water every year by applying basic water conservation strategies. For instance, if you have your well and septic system, the extra water released each day will soak the soil in the septic system absorption field to a point where extensive repair or replacement is necessary. Conserving water can extend the system's life and delay the need for repair. If you live in an area serviced by a municipal water system, the greater your water use, the more you pay for water. Also, water conservation can help prevent water pollution. Overloading a septic system may cause nutrient and bacterial contamination. Of nearby lakes, streams, and drinking water, even the water from your well. The smaller the amount of water flowing through these systems, the lower the likelihood of pollution. Pollution costs money, too. Excessive weed growth in a lake caused by mineral enrichment from poorly functioning septic systems often means costly weed control measures paid for by you and your neighbours. If they can be repaired, Polluted home water wells can cost thousands of dollars to fix. Saving Water Saves Nature: Saving water likewise decreases the risk of natural disasters such as droughts. We must reuse water in the same number as we're likely to save significantly. Saving water turns out to be critical for up-and-coming generations. They won't have enough

Watershed Management (BCV405D) BLDEACET, Vijayapur. CSM 4  National water management policies should take account of the impact of trade in water-intensive goods on water availability and ecosystems integrity. For example, in water scarce regions, people should grow crops with low water requirements, or of high value compared to the water used. Options for improving the water balance by importing water intensive goods from water-rich regions should be explored, where appropriate and cost-effective.  The potential of rainwater harvesting for augmenting rural and urban water supply is increasingly becoming recognized. This alternative should be further explored and utilized.  Proper water pricing must be an integral part of water policies. However, care must be taken to ensure that the poor and socially disadvantaged are not denied access. Moreover, there must be adequate monitoring and control of market mechanisms.  It is necessary to study and analyze the impacts of subsidies (on water, energy, and other relevant inputs) on water use. Subsidies that inhibit water use efficiency or cause negative effects on the environment should be reduced.  Our traditional water management approaches and systems were both sustainable and accountable. These need to revived and invigorated. Policies must recognize and build on these.  Principles of reuse and recycling of water resources must be incorporated into water management plans and strategies. There must be incentives for water conservation. PUBLIC EDUCATION AND AWARENESS  Public awareness and education on the importance of protection of the coastal and ocean environment helps to meet social and economic needs and aspirations of the country in the long run.  Awareness campaigns on existing regulations for management of coastal areas need to be conducted. Education and communication material on the need for conservation and protection of rare and endangered species need to be developed.  Research findings on marine resources, their development and management have to be demystified. The educational and communication material targeted at the public has to be developed in local languages.  Opportunities for interactions between communities, policy makers, regulating
