ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE From SIRI to self-driving cars, artificial intelligence (AI) is progressing rapidly. When considering how AI might become a risk, experts think two scenarios most likely: The AI is programmed to do something devastating: Autonomous weapons are artificial intelligence systems that are programmed to kill. In the hands of the wrong person, these weapons could easily cause mass casualties. Moreover, an AI arms race could inadvertently lead to an AI war that also results in mass casualties. To avoid being thwarted by the enemy, these weapons would be designed to be extremely difficult to simply “turn off,” so humans could plausibly lose control of such a situation. The AI is programmed to do something beneficial, but it develops a destructive method for achieving its goal: This can happen whenever we fail to fully align the AI’s goals with ours, which is strikingly difficult. If you ask an obedient intelligent car to take you to the airport as fast as possible, it might get you there chased by helicopters and covered in vomit, doing not what you wanted but literally what you asked for. o a self-driving car = a vehicle that is capable of sensing its environment and moving safely with little or no human input: xe tự lái o to progress /prəˈɡres/ (v) = to improve or develop over a period of time: tiến bộ o scenario /səˈnæriəʊ/ (n) = a description of how things might happen in the future: viễn cảnh o autonomous weapon = a weapon system that, once activated, can select and engage targets without further intervention by a human operator: vũ khí giết người tự động o in the hands of the wrong person: trong tay kẻ xấu o mass casualties: thương vong hàng loạt o arms race /ˈɑːmz ˌreɪs/ (n) = a situation in which countries compete to get the most and best weapons: cuộc chạy đua vũ trang o to thwart /θwɔːrt/ (v) = to prevent somebody from doing what they want to do: cản trở o to lose control of something = to be unable to control something: mất kiểm soát o to align /əˈlaɪn/ (v) = to be the same or similar, or to agree with each other: làm cho giống nhau, phù hợp với nhau Source: https://futureoflife.org/background/benefits-risks-of-artificial-intelligence/ SYNONYMS o to cause ... » to result in ...
