Distillation The purification of liquids based on their difference in the boiling points is known as distillation. Example: Let us take a salt-water solution and boil it. While the vapours generated condense to form pure water and collect in the other container, the salt is left behind in the beaker. Terms to understand i) Vapour pressure: At equilibrium, the pressure exerted by the vapours over the liquid surface is known as vapour pressure. ii) Boiling point: The temperature at which the vapour pressure of a liquid is equal to the external pressure is known as the boiling point. The maximum temperature to which a liquid can be heated at a given pressure beyond which it converts to vapour spontaneously is known as its boiling point.
