2 2: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY I will be doing business as , I believe my name is unique enough to be memorable to my consumer. I will be located in New York City as many of the connections I have already made will be based out of the east coast of the US. Additionally, the office of the company that manufactures the software I use is based in New York, similar to many other large music companies. Long term I see myself performing and recording with artists of all genres bringing the recorded elements of their music to the stage via my hybrid set up. I am offering a service that does not exist in the industry yet and one that I believe will be extremely helpful for artists looking to bring high production value to their shows without as large of a price tag. I will be running the business by myself as the only person needed to maintain the business. The total startup cost is estimated to be $8,440 including trademark costs, equipment, and space rental. The versatility provided by my approach to the instrument will not only diversify which types of work opportunities I will be able to take but will ultimately give me an advantage over my competitors as I can do everything they can while still performing as a traditional drummer.
3 3: FOUNDATIONS Description of Business I am a session drummer working in recording and performance. I use a hybrid setup to recreate artists recorded music along with drumming in the traditional sense. I also produce music for synch in ads and other visual media. I provide a service to artists looking to incorporate electronic elements into their live performances that previously required hiring a dj or playing along to a track. Not only do I offer the services of a live drummer but am capable of all roles assigned to playback and dj’s using my hybrid electronic/acoustic set up. With this artists are able to get the same quality of performance as their recorded music giving them freedom to explore new arrangements or faithful recreations of their recordings and everything in between on stage. Company History has trained in music since they were four years old, starting initially with piano and moving to drum set by age 8. Playing a set their parents got off of craigslist for years working on making the best sounds of what was available. Through this they learned the value of versatility, the more styles they played the more comfortable they felt in new musical settings. During the initial months of the pandemic when many artists started to shift their music to social media with livestream concerts and posts featuring stripped down versions of their songs I started following drummers work with sensory percussion. With sensory percussion drummers were creating full radio ready tracks for short Instagram or YouTube videos while recording from home. I was inspired by the technology because it allows for drummers to incorporate sounds from an artist’s recording into the live performance directly into their instrument. With this you could perform an arrangement of a stadium ready performance in your bedroom and everything between. Mission Statement Our mission is to provide artists with a tool for performing that allows them to have record like quality in their live shows without the need for a DJ or prerecorded tracks. We hope to bring life to artists performances across styles without sacrificing any benefits of their recorded work. Social Entrepreneurship It is a goal of CALDER to prioritize work with other artists coming from marginalized communities and maintain a diverse skill set to accomplish the goals of their clients regardless of genre/style.
4 Goals and Objectives I am aiming for a Minimum of 20 performances in the first year, 1-2 each month. Establish a group of musicians/clients to continue work in the next year through jobs taken on as well as personal connections. Save 5,000 by taking a percentage off of earnings so that there is a small cushion to fall back on if needed. For services in performances or sessions rates could go from a one-time payment of $150 for a four-hour session to an hourly rate of $100 for extended studio sessions in a “work for hire” setting. First private lessons will cost $50 and all following hour long weekly/bi-weekly lessons will be on a sliding scale from $60-$75 depending on what the student can afford. In one week with 4 students and a performance paying $150 I could earn $450 in one week. Starting with a smaller number of students working towards a consistent 6-10 students in a week each student studying weekly paying around $70 a lesson taking approximately 40 lessons in a year would provide $2800. With this being the “average” student and considering that students may start or stop lessons through the year by maintaining at least 4-6 students at a time I could rely on $350-$420 a week with lessons. With 1-2 performances a week for $200 and recordings added on to this as well as potential synch opportunities I could plan on five to six hundred dollars a week making for 2,400 a month (with a 4-week month). Strategic Business Unit (SBU) Projected Weekly Sales in Units Projected Monthly Sales in Units Project Monthly Revenue Projected Annual Revenue Lessons 5 20 $1,400 $16,800 Performances 2 8 $800 $9,600 Session work 1 4 $500 $6,000 Key Leadership I will be operating my business by myself as I am the only one necessary to run all aspects as teacher, musician, manager, etc. The organizational structure will be, from the top down, myself to accountants/lawyers and managers. I don’t anticipate any need to hire any employees in the first year of business and thus have not included them in this plan.
