Unit 1: Digital Citizenship Overview: This unit discusses copyright and Creative commons licenses and open source concepts through different types of software available in the market: Freeware, Free Software, Open Source, Proprietary and Shareware. Through this unit, students will explore intellectual property rights and analyse the trade offs between keeping information public versus private. Essential Questions: ● What kind of rules protect everyone's rights when we use each other's content? ● How can I ensure that the images and content which I have used from the internet are free for anyone to use? Enduring understanding: Students will understand that: ● Copyright protects all kinds of creative work so that artists/creators can get paid for their effort. ● The circle © indicates copyright, but copyright protection exists even without the symbol. Creators have ownership over their work, unless they sell it to someone else. ● Creative Commons license options can be used when the creator wants to share their work with the public and at the same time protect aspects of their work and decide how their work should be used by the others. ● We need to use advanced search that lets us choose images which are free to be used. We should also read the license documentation in the form of a link that is normally present with copyrighted work to ensure that the content can be freely used. Content: ● Digital Safety ● Information sharing ● Protecting our work online using Creative Commons ● Open Source Software Essential Vocabulary: Copyright, License, Creative Commons, Information validation, Closed source, Proprietary software, Commercial purposes, Public Domain, Share Alike, Non-derivative works, Attribution Pixabay license, GNU Free documentation license 2
