Early Steps Confidential | 2 On a quiet winter morning in December 2022, Jaap Haartsen connected his Bluetooth earphones to his phone and started to listen to classical music as he made himself an omelette for breakfast. Jaap, who loved science and technology, smiled as he thought of how Science and History were taught as separate lessons in schools. His experiences in the real world had taught him that they were all interrelated, with the story of Bluetooth being an example. Jaap and his team came up with the “short link” technology that could connect two devices. However it was important that the two devices remained at a short distance, hence the name “short link”. This would later be named Bluetooth. Jaap, however, had other inventors in history to thank for his invention. But how could a technology of the 21st century have its basis in history? Invention Movies and wars “The brains of people are more interesting than the looks I think,” - Hedy Lamarr, actress and inventor Image: Jaap Haartsen, the Dutch inventor of Bluetooth Jaap, a Danish engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur was credited with the invention of Bluetooth. Bluetooth was a technology that enabled various appliances to talk to each other. A tiny chip enabled machines such as phones, cameras, computers, washing machines, etc. to communicate with each other. Hollywood, the cinema of the United States, and World War II were the original sources of invention for not just modern day Bluetooth, but multiple other wireless technologies (technologies which allow devices to connect without any wires ). Hedy Lamarr who was an actress when World War II happened, had a passion for science and innovation. In her downtime from acting work, she would spend hours with her chips and boards, conducting several scientific experiments. In this process of innovation, she, along with her friend, invented a technology to safely and securely transfer communication signals between soldiers during war, thus enabling the passing of secret messages between two parties.
Early Steps Confidential | 3 This technology was used for important communication, with the enemies being unable to intercept the signal. Her invention later proved to be a game changer in the field of wireless communication and paved the foundation for today’s mobile phones, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and of course GPS. Simply put, without her, there might have been no WiFi, no Bluetooth and even no smartphones. What was developed for war, later became the basis for future technological innovation and helped give the world modern wireless technologies. King Harald Bluetooth was the second King of Denmark and was famous for uniting Denmark and Norway, which were two European countries. The technology developed by Jaap and his team united machines, computers and phones with each other, thus enabling them to communicate. The idea of uniting, which King Harald Bluetooth was known for, became the basis for naming the technology as “ Bluetooth”. Even the symbol for Bluetooth came from runes, characters from an ancient Germanic alphabet used in part of Europe from the 3rd century to the Middle Ages. The symbol came from merging the two initials of the king, H and B, in Nordic runes. Jaap’s Danish heritage was hence a major factor in the naming and the logo of Bluetooth. Bluetooth symbol It is not just Bluetooth’s invention that is rich in history, its symbol is also a rich gift of the past. Jaap’s Danish (people from Denmark) origins also influenced aspects of the invention. There once was a Danish king, Haraldr Blátǫnn Gormsson. His name, when translated to English, was Harald Bluetooth. But what did a king have to do with a modern scientific invention? Image: King Harald Bluetooth on the right. Several ancient symbols can be seen being used in the modern world. The symbols on ambulances are an example. The symbol of a stick with a snake around it was an ancient greek symbol for the God of medicine - Asclepius (pronunciation - ask - le - pius). Early Steps Confidential | 4 How is connecting the past with the present important? How can something as horrible as war bring about incredible products? Is it wrong to change the meaning of old symbols and turn them into new ones? Right - the symbol of Asclepius (The God of Medicine) People confused the rod of Asclepius with the symbol of Hermes (pronunciation - huh - meez) which was the Caduceus (pronounciation - ca-due-see-us) or The Staff of Hermes. Hermes was the god of travellers, thieves, merchants, messengers and orators. Both symbols had a snake on a staff and hence were easily confused with each other. The Staff of Hermes was first used in a medical sense when it was used as the symbol of the U.S Army Medical Corps in 1902 by mistake. However, the symbols gained new meaning in medical symbology (the study of symbols used). Both symbols are now used in the medical field despite having different meanings in ancient times. Many thoughts ran through Jaap’s head as he finished his breakfast. He was proud of the symbol that had been designed for Bluetooth technology. He was slightly surprised by how ancient symbols had survived through history and found new meanings even in the 21st century world. While he felt proud about himself, he couldn’t help but feel grateful for people in the past - poets, musicians, scientists, artists, warriors, researchers and even the common people - who paved the way for pathbreaking modern inventions. Jaap wondered which of today’s innovations would set the tone for large developments in the 30th century!
