3 Episode 6 shows us the theme of the relationship between fathers and sons. Bloom's lost his father who committed suicide and also his son. During the funeral scene he sees other fathers and sons with an eye of understanding and sympathy. Stephen has a biological father Simon and Leopold who behaves like ar father for him even if Stephen he's not. He does not really accept Leopold as a father, but Leopold’s attitude is that of a father that wants to protect and help him. So, their relationship follows the archetype of Irish literature. VIRGINIA WOOLF and the MODERNISM - Mrs Dolloway- To the Lighthouse- Orlando VW belongs to the Modernist writers for her style in writing and the importance she gives to the characters inner world. She gave life to the Bloomsbury group, a circle of intellectuals that spent time in her house discussing about aesthetics and philosophical questions in a spirit of rejection of all the scheme belonging to the Victorian Age. She uses the interior monologue technique in order to explore the human mind and usually describes inner world of female characters, like Clarissa in MRS Dolloway, Mrs Ramsey in TO THE LIGHTHOUSE and Orlando that wakes up as a woman. Virginia Woolf doesn’t want to present events in chronological order or temporal sequences, but she is interested in the impressions of the characters who live that moment, in their subjectivity. Her stories are told by the characters themselves and this creates an emotional connection with the reader. In MRS DOLLOWAY we don’t have a narrator, we know about the story thanks to Clarissa’s thoughts, when she finds Peter waiting for her on the door, when she remembers their relationship, we realize Clarissa is not happy about the relationship with her husband, Richard. In the way the plot goes on there is no correspondence between tha chronological time and the interior time. The novel takes place in a single day (the same of Ulysse by Joyce), but the presence of endless thoughts, where past and future overlap seems to have a different duration. The presence of death is strong here like in Joyce’s works, there is a continuous tension of the mind about these thoughts and memories. In TO THE LIGHTHOUSE too the duration of the events doesn’t follow a chronological order. We have 3 sections in which the novel is divided that cover different periods in the characters life. The central figure is Mrs Ramsey, a woman that is very protective of her family. She believes that men have to work for the family’s wealth, but at the same time they need a support that only women can give them. It’s important the theme of art that can preserve the memory of people, as in Mrs Ramsey’s painting by the friend Lili. The realization of the painting starts at the beginning of the novel and is the only mean that can give a order and connect different elements of the world. Art is the only thing to remain in a world destinated to change. The story of Orlando spans over three hundred years. During this time Orlando changes gender from man to woman. He Falls asleep for a period of days and rebels think he is already Dead. When he awakes, he finds he has become a woman, the same person with same personality and intellect, but in different body. From here on, Orlando’s inclination in love changes frequently. Orlando sex change Trough the novel plays an important part in his character development. Orlando ages and lives through many ages and realizes that he is composed of and hundreds of selves and experiences. All these experiences and selves combine to form the person he is at the present moment. He is part of Nature and not immortal, so this self too will
