Student Union Registration Form Name: Stefan Unger Degree programme: (1) ______ postgraduate _______ Department: (2) ______ engineering _______ Leisure activities: (3) ______ computer games _______ Language(s) (apart from English): (4) ______ German _______ Type of accommodation: (5) ______(in) hall _______ Contact number: 0295069003 TRANSCRIPT Anna: Hi, can I help you? Stefan: Um – yeah, I hope so. Erm – this is the first time I’ve been down to the Union – I’m a new international student – and I just wondered what to do. Anna: Oh right. Well, normally we ask international students to fill out this form and we put your details on the wall by reception. Then other students can contact you – it’s a way for everybody to get to know each other. It can be a bit lonely otherwise. Stefan: Oh I see. Anna: What’s your name? I’m Anna, by the way. Stefan: It’s Stefan Unger. Anna: OK – well just write that there – next to name – and then fill in the rest. Stefan: Right. Um – what does it mean degree programme? Anna: Oh, just if you are an undergraduate or a post-graduate – or maybe you’re just here for a short course? Stefan: I’m a postgraduate. Do I need to say what in? Anna: Not really – it’s too much detail. But you should put your department so people who have the same interests – or problems – as you can get in touch. Stefan: So l’m studying Marine Construction so, for Department, do I put down the Science faculty then? Anna: Just your actual Department. That must be Engineering, no?

3 Welcome to Our Neighbourhood, the programme that looks at the different places and conditions that people live in. Today we are visiting the Outback, a distant part of Australia far from the main population centres. Imagine you are living on a farm and your nearest neighbours are over 100 kilometres away. It certainly is very lonely and isolated. And this is how it feels for many people living on farms in the Outback of Australia, far away from the cities and towns. Some people are lucky enough to have email and the internet, but many do not even have a telephone line. Everyone has a two-way radio. You can listen as well as talk into it, and it is the most important means of contact with other people. When someone needs a doctor urgently, they use their two-way radio to contact the flying doctors. That's a special medical service that covers 6 million square kilometres of Australia. The doctors fly to an emergency in a small aeroplane or helicopter, and they say they can arrive at any place within 90 minutes. There are 13 flying doctor bases in Australia with 38 aeroplanes and helicopters. They visit 150,000 people every year. Another problem to solve is education. How do you go to school when you are living 500 kilometres from the nearest one? Some kids go to boarding schools, others have their lessons sent by post, but most Outback children use their two-way radios twice a day to listen to their teachers and to communicate with them and with other Outback students.
