Landslides are a common problem in Malaysia. A landslide happens when rocks, soil, and mud slide down a hill or mountain. There are different causes of landslides, such as heavy rain, earthquakes, and cutting down trees. Malaysia has many hills and mountains, so some places have a high risk of landslides. They often happen in the rainy season when the ground becomes too wet and soft. Landslides can destroy houses, roads, and buildings. Sometimes, people get hurt or even die. One of the worst landslides in Malaysia happened in 1993 at the Highland Towers in Selangor. After many days of heavy rain, the ground became too weak. A big landslide caused a tall apartment building to fall. Sadly, 48 people lost their lives. To stop landslides, the government has made stronger rules for building houses and roads. They also check unsafe areas and improve drainage systems to keep the ground strong and dry.
