4 I The Holy Orders GMs may also be interested in The Inquisition GM’s Guide, a companion book that can aid them in crafting unforgettable stories — full of heretical plots, adventures, and NPCs to help them run investigative and espionage- focused missions. Players lacking sufficient clearance should beware of that sanctioned tome; it is intended for the GM’s eyes only! The Imperium is beset within and without by threats beyond counting and horrors beyond imagination. That it endures at all is a miracle of steadfast determination and the callous sacrifice of uncountable lives. Some of the Imperium’s foes can be met head-on, on unending battlefields and in the deep void of space. These threats can be cleansed by blessed promethium, cut down by the volleys of a thousand, thousand lasguns, or turned briefly into glittering clouds of expanding gas by a voidship’s macrocannon. Other foes are stranger and more insidious, far more difficult to root out, but no less of an existential threat to the entire Imperium. The eternal vigil against such threats falls to The Holy Orders of the Emperor’s Inquisition, as merciless and menacing an organisation as Humanity has ever known. To citizens of the Imperium, Inquisitors appear omniscient, incomprehensibly powerful, and terrifyingly merciless in their duty to protect the Imperium. Countless tales have been told of the exploits of Inquisitors and their loyal acolytes, whispered amongst habworkers during a brief reprieve from their labours or shared between shivering Astra Militarum soldiers huddled in the muddy sanctuary of a frigid foxhole. Even the most outlandish of such stories can only begin to touch upon the truth of what it is to serve the Inquisition. How could any who had not been there to witness his sacrifices understand why Inquisitor Tranth ordered the death of an entire world based on the testimony of just a single trusted acolyte? How could any who had not sworn secret oaths before an Inquisitor of the Ordo Malleus know what it was to save a million lives, only to forfeit their own soul to the warp in the process? Most Imperial citizens cannot begin to comprehend how much they owe to the Inquisition, nor can they guess at the horrors its Inquisitors have committed in their name. While some might imagine a unified, all-knowing organisation, with nothing and no one beyond its reach, this is far from the truth. The Inquisition is an organisation of independent, often mutually hostile Inquisitors operating alone in the dark. Their alliances are temporary and rife with suspicion, their enmities enduring and often lethal. An Inquisitor has theoretically boundless authority, but its application lies entangled amid the Imperium’s bureaucratic and political hegemonies. Some of Humanity’s finest mortal warriors are among the Holy Orders — but none are infallible. Every day, Inquisitors and their loyal acolytes face corruption that must be purged, though the very effort risks their own damnation. These hand-picked outcasts, oddities, and adepts act as an Inquisitor’s clandestine vanguard in their galaxy-spanning war. Despite their servant’s loyalty, many an Inquisitor has met their end at the hands of their most trusted acolyte — the prime witness of them crossing a line from which could be no return. Nevertheless, without the Inquisition and its servants, the Imperium would surely burn. THE HOLY ORDERS I
