Dangerous Waters EARLY STEPS ACADEMY | Making global leaders of tomorrow SNEHA BISWAS
Early Steps Confidential | 2 It was February 2021. As Muhammadu Buhari, the president of Nigeria read the news about the release of 15 men who had been kidnapped recently, he felt relieved. He, however, knew that this was not the end. The kidnapping was done by pirates in the seas of the Gulf of Guinea. Pirates were people who attacked and robbed ships at sea. They had created trouble throughout history. Even during the times of ancient Greek and Roman empires, pirates had attacked ships. President Buhari knew that the Gulf of Guinea, the part of the sea close to is country, Nigeria (in Africa), was particularly troublesome. This recent incident was yet another instance of a group of pirates getting on a ship, firing gunshots, kidnapping everyone and even killing one person. Buhari wasn’t sure if there was a permanent solution to this problem. from one place to another. Ships can carry very large amounts of goods thereby helping people to move things between countries. A lot of international trade, the act of buying and selling goods across countries, was possible because of sea transportation, apart from air and road routes. Some old road routes, such as the Silk route, have been subjects of study in history lessons. Seas were a popular mode of transportation of several high-value ( expensive) and heavy goods such as vehicles, medicines, electronics, machinery, etc. Therefore, for pirates, capturing the ships meant that they could steal all these expensive goods and sell them to make money. Another way for pirates to make money was to kidnap people on the ship and then ask for money (known as ransom) from the companies that the men worked fo,r or the government of countries that the captured men belonged to, in exchange for their freedom. Pirates used knives, guns and other weapons to scare people on the ships. In the 21st century, pirates also used advanced technology to communicate between their groups, and to trace the location and movement of ships that they intended to attack.
