Before His Eyes by Bu Wen San Jiu Chapter 1 Pan Xiaozhuo reached out to take it, but Shi Kai raised his hand so it was out of reach. “Thank Kai-ge.” ___ There was a snowstorm the night before. Without much wind, the piled-up snow on the road hadn’t been blown away; car tyres trundled over it again and again, and this morning black mud had accumulated, half a foot high, on the surface of the road. In the morning, Pan Xiaozhuo first took his little cousin to kindergarten. By the time he boarded the bus, it was a bit late. At this hour of the morning, most of the occupants of the bus rounds were students, though not many were from Pan Xiaozhuo’s school. After all, most of those students had paid exorbitant fees to enter. Only a very small percentage of them were people like Pan Xiaozhuo, who were admitted on their grades and didn’t have to pay tuition. Not many of those who could afford such high fees to enroll in a private school would be waiting for public transport in the biting wind on a winter’s day. Pan Xiaozhuo memorised vocabulary on the ride. He had a little vocabulary book that he carried in his pocket every day, and he memorised as many as he could when he had a spare moment. Someone was eating baozi 1 on the bus; the smell of meat filled the vehicle. Pan Xiaozhuo hadn’t had time to eat this morning. Now, smelling the baozi, he could feel how empty his stomach was. Since there was snow on the road, the bus couldn’t go fast. By the time it wobbled its way to the stop by the school, there were only three minutes left to the bell. The back of the bus let out a “pssh” of gas and the doors slowly opened. Pan Xiaozhuo leapt down hurriedly. He had to rush now. If he was caught being late, he would have to stand at the guard house downstairs from reception for the whole of the morning self-study period. All teachers and senior personnel of the school would be able to see him when they walked past. Pan Xiaozhuo was very afraid of this. Every time anyone so much as swept a gaze over him, he would feel uncomfortable, not knowing where to put his hands, where to set his eyes. But today, things just weren’t going his way. He was destined not to make it into the teaching block before the bell rang. The instant he left the bus and touched ground, even before he took a step, an electric bicycle came shooting out from behind. The older man on the bike shouted “hey, hey”; Pan Xiaozhuo darted to the side in a panic, but didn’t manage to avoid him. 1 A type of bun, usually served hot. 眼前 by 不问三九, Chapter 1: https://www.jjwxc.net/onebook.php?novelid=7142651&chapterid=1 This chapter is a fan translation by @nandemonksloth. Before His Eyes by Bu Wen San Jiu - When he walked into the school from the side gate, Pan Xiaozhuo’s down jacket was half smeared with black mud, as was his bag. He’d reached out to dust it off earlier, but only managed to dirty his clothes even worse, covering his hand with snow and water too—it hurt from the cold. As he passed the school field, Pan Xiaozhuo thought, not only did he have to stand by the guard house door today—he would stand there covered pathetically in mud. He sighed silently. The more he feared something, the harder it was to avoid. - “Little glasses!” Someone behind him shouted. The moment Pan Xiaozhuo heard that voice, his heart shuddered even worse. But he still turned around, subconsciously. “Whoa, you fell?” The boy wearing a baseball cap chewed gum as he walked alongside two other boys carrying a bin. His tone was raffish. “All covered in mud... You look like a stray dog.” Pan Xiaozhuo watched them walk over, rooted in one spot. He pursed his lips but didn’t speak. “You fell?” One of the other tall boys asked, giving him a look. Among the three of them, this was the one Pan Xiaozhuo feared the least. He was afraid of the other two. At first, Pan Xiaozhuo was afraid of him too, but now he was close to his deskmate, and this was his deskmate’s xiao-ge 2 . He saw him every day, so he wasn’t scared anymore. Pan Xiaozhuo went “mhm”, bowing his head as he listened to the three of them getting nearer and nearer. “And you’re late, too. You can stand like this in the doorway later, then, saying hello to everyone. By the time you’re done standing for self-study period, half a catty of water will have dripped off you,” the cap-wearing one said. He always spoke with an annoying, teasing tone. Pan Xiaozhuo’s eyelids drooped even more heavily. He even wondered whether he should just stand outside and only come back in after self-study period was over. “Or you could call me ge 3 , and your Nan-ge will bring you in,” the cap-wearer added. Pan Xiaozhuo looked at him and didn’t make a sound. 3 Ge = older brother, a respectful way to refer to an older boy/man. 2 Literally “younger older brother”. His deskmate has two older brothers, and this is the younger of them. 眼前 by 不问三九, Chapter 1: https://www.jjwxc.net/onebook.php?novelid=7142651&chapterid=1 This chapter is a fan translation by @nandemonksloth. Before His Eyes by Bu Wen San Jiu “Well, stand there then. Be a greeter all morning, all drip-drip-dripping with muddy water.” Ji Nan laughed, popping his gum as well. “You’re such a smart-arse,” said the boy in a white jacket at the very edge. “Or you can call on him, too.” Ji Nan pointed his chin towards the white-jacket boy and said to Pan Xiaozhuo, “Call him Kai-ge, ask Kai-ge to bring you in.” Pan Xiaozhuo lifted his eyes and cast a swift glance; the white-jacket boy didn’t even look at him. He turned his gaze away, finally looking at the one he was most familiar with, in the centre. He called out “Chi-ge”. Chi Cheng opened the cover of the bin and signalled to Pan Xiaozhuo. Pan Xiaozhuo understood in a single second. He rapidly pulled his bag off and chucked it in the bin. The bin wasn’t empty, either. Ji Nan’s bag was in it. - Ji Nan himself had come late. Seeing it was about time, he asked these two bros from the science stream out to empty the rubbish bin. This way, he could mix in with them. Pan Xiaozhuo followed behind the three, ten centimetres shorter than them—he was like a little tail. “Four people to empty one bin?” The supervisor in charge of catching latecomers gave them a look. Pan Xiaozhuo shuddered in fear. Ji Nan went “hehe” and replied, “Yuh-huh. Morning, Supervisor Zhao! Our class is in charge of cleaning this week, for the upper area.” Supervisor Zhao snorted, obviously not intending to actually hold him responsible. “You’re not even in the same class. Cleaning, my foot.” Ji Nan laughed again. “Thanks, Supervisor! Thanks for your hard work!” “Get lost!” Supervisor Zhao dismissed them with an eyeroll. Pan Xiaozhuo didn’t even dare to lift his head. When he reached their floor, he took off his mud-stained down jacket and retrieved his bag from the bin, carrying it with his hand. Ji Nan had left. Pan Xiaozhuo bowed and said “thanks” to Chi Cheng and Shi Kai. 眼前 by 不问三九, Chapter 1: https://www.jjwxc.net/onebook.php?novelid=7142651&chapterid=1 This chapter is a fan translation by @nandemonksloth.
