Page 1 of 16 1. Fractions – Revision Part 1 a) What is a fraction? A fraction is a part of a whole number. The top part of a fraction is called the NUMERATOR and the bottom part of a fraction is called the DENOMINATOR. Example Here 1 4 of the circle has been shaded. Here 3 5 of the rectangle has been shaded. Here 52 100 of the square has been shaded. b) Equivalent fractions It must follow that 1 2 = 2 4 = 4 8 . NUMERATOR DENOMINATOR
Page 3 of 16 Example 3. Find 1 6 + 5 12 1 6 + 5 12 = 2×1 2×6 + 5 12 = 2 12 + 5 12 = 7 12 The number, 12, is called a Lowest Common Denominator (LCD). It is the lowest number that both 6 and 12 will divide into. Example 4. Find 2 3 − 4 9 2 3 − 4 9 = 3×2 3×3 − 4 9 = 6 9 − 4 9 = 2 9 Here 9 is the LCD. Example 5. Find 2 − 2 3 2 − 2 3 = 2 1 − 2 3 = 3×2 3×1 − 2 3 = 6 3 − 2 3 = 4 3 = 1 1 3 . Here the LCD is 3. Example 6. Find 3 4 − 1 6 3 4 − 1 6 = 3×3 3×4 − 2×1 2×6 = 9 12 − 2 12 = 7 12 Example 7. Find 7 3 4 − 1 1 6 Here the LCD will be 12. 7 3 4 − 1 1 6 = 31 4 − 7 6 = 31×3 4×3 − 7×2 6×2 = 93 12 − 14 12 = 79 12 = 6 7 12
