Year 2 Maths – 2019b Term 3 2024 – Week 3 Notes The most important thing when getting numbers in the right order is to know the place value. Place value is the value of each digit in a number: a. Look out for what is in the hundred place, then tens place and ones place in the given numbers. b. Decide what number will get the value to increase (or decrease) Homework Sheet Pg 2, Q1 Hint: • Is the number increasing or decreasing in value? • What is the difference between each number?
Hint: • Look at the last 2 numbers and find out the difference between them. Homework Sheet Pg 3 Arrange these numbers in order. Start with the greatest number. a. Note that all the numbers are in the hundreds place. b. Look out for the number that has the greatest hundreds, in this case the 9 hundreds: 941 and 902. Then determine which number has the greater tens: 941 has 4 tens, while 902 has no tens. Therefore, 941 should come before 902. c. Work with the next numbers that have their hundreds places smaller than 9 and then apply the same concept. d. Arrange the numbers so that they are in descending order.
Extra challenge! Start from the biggest number and finish at the smallest number: 12 292 1209 301 22 202 1099 290 57 10 1100 This is difficult! Pay attention! Fill in the blanks, using these numbers.
Let’s try a difficult one: a) 690 is 33 less than ______ One option is to use a number line to help you: ___________________690________________??_______________________________ 33 i. Is the number greater or smaller than 690? ii. Take 690 + 33, find the answer now. iii. Then examine if taking 33 away from the answer (less than) will yield 690. If yes, then you’re on the right track. Let’s try another difficult problem: e) ____ is 90 more than 600. How are you going to use this number line to help you? _____________________600____________________________??________ 90 Let’s learn another way to do addition correctly! 79 + 34 70 + 9 + 30 + 4 70 + 30 + 9 + 4 = 100 + 13 = 113 What did you notice about this method we are learning today? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rboeGFVD9qA
