In this case referring to the brain bouncing against the skull as a result of a head injury. compulsory If something is compulsory you must do it because of a rule or law. concussion Temporary damage to the brain caused by a fall or hit on the head or by violent shaking. Discussion: According to the article, how can you best protect yourself from lasting damage? Possible responses: • wearing protective headgear • recognising that you might be concussed after a knock to the head • seeking medical attention • stopping play and not playing again until at least four weeks after a concussion. Part 3 – Vocabulary: Discuss word meanings and complete several examples. If time permits, students can be nominated to look up words in their dictionaries. contemplated contemplate: think about – to consider one particular thing for a long time in a serious and quiet way. induction The process of discovering a general principle from a set of facts. In this case ‘induction from the past’ refers to making predictions about the future based on past occurrences. agony Extreme physical or mental pain or suffering. prophet A person who is believed to have a special power that allows them to say what a god wishes to tell people, especially about things that will happen in the future. instinct A natural ability that helps you decide what to do or how to act without thinking. suffice To be enough. prediction A statement about what you think will happen in the future. wondering wonder: to ask yourself questions or express a wish to know about something.
