All Rights Reserved. 1 THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR FOR A SUCCESSFUL INTERVIEW IS “PREPARATION” Some of you will be conducting interviews for the 1st time ● This document provides the basic info you need to conduct a successful interview Intv. are a crucial process for obtaining info from people directly affected or experts ● When developing biz ideas to address social issues, it is essential to visit the field & listen to those directly affected by the problem in question When conducting an Intv., the most important thing is preparation ● The success of the Intv. will depend on how thoroughly you have prepared Overview 1Clarify the goal of the Interview ● Clearly describe what you want to uncover in the interview – Planning to participate in SIH & want to hear opinions firsthand – Aiming to solve a specific issue, particularly XX in the XX field 2Create an Interview Agenda ● Comprehensively list who you want to ask & what you want to ask them – For stakeholders directly affected by the issue: ○ What do they consider to be the core of the problem? ○ Regarding the issue××, do they think ~ is a major contributing factor? – For experts & pioneers working on solutions to the issue: ○ Do they think a service like this could potentially resolve the issue? 3Identify Interviewees & schedule appointments ● Politely explain the Intv background via email/phone & schedule a convenient time for the interviewee – Make sure you request politely and respectfully Things to do during the preparation phase

All Rights Reserved. 2 TYPES OF INTERVIEWEE It is crucial to select interviewees aligned with the purpose of your interview Issue Stakeholders ● Farmers – Slash & burn farming/Paddy methane ● Restaurant – Food loss Examples of People Individuals working on solutions Business/Academia Features Likely to participate in an Intv. ● Constantly addressing challenges & seeking understanding ● Empathy is important during the Intv. ● Local Communities ● NPO organizations Potentially willing to participate in Interviews ● Constantly addressing challenges & seeking understanding ● Professors researching the relevant field ● Startups engaging in innovative initiatives Always very busy so must be clear benefits for them ● Their time & effort generally, requires appropriate “compensation” Target this group 1st asking lots of questions Try if there is time Volunteer groups

All Rights Reserved. 3 FLOW FROM THE START TILL THE END OF THE INTERVIEW Wrap up Discussion Icebreaker 1Start by thanking them for their attendance & introducing yourself 2Next, Explain the context of the meeting/interview ● Background of participation in SIH, purpose of the meeting 3Request the interviewee to introduce themselves ● Their background, current interests, areas of focus etc. 4Start with open-ended questions ● For stakeholders: “What challenges have you been facing recently?“ ● For experts: “What are your thoughts on the issue of ○○? What initiatives exist?” 5Gradually narrow the scope & explore the root cause of the issue ● “I believe the root cause of this issue is ○○. What are your thoughts on that?” ● “If a service like this existed, do you think it would resolve the issue?” 6State the next steps clearly ● If the discussion feels incomplete: “I’d love to discuss this further with you.” ● If the purpose was misaligned: “I’ll take this back and think it through carefully.” 7Don’t forget to send a thank you email after the meeting TODO
