FASTING & ABSTINENCE RULES IN THE PHILIPPINES “[...] do not pamper yourself, but love fasting.” (Rule of Saint Benedict 4:10-13) ¶ ACCORDING to present legislation in the Philippines, fasting and abstinence is obligatory on all able-bodied men and women on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday; the requirement to abstain begins at age 14, while the requirement to fast begins at age 18 until 59. Fasting refers to the limitation on the quantity of food intake, whilst abstinence refers to the forgoing of the consumption of the meat of warm-blooded animals. Eggs, butter, and dairy are permitted during abstinence days in the Philippines since time immemorial. In this calendar, the fishbone graphic in light grey refers to days when abstinence is alone prescribed, but the practice of substituting abstinence with some pious or charitable activities is permitted. This is the practice on all Fridays of the year, except for solemnities. The fishbone graphic in black, on the other hand, refers to days when fasting is accompanied by abstinence, and when substitution is prohibited. Such is the case for Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. A fishbone graphic in dark grey refers to days when fasting and abstinence used to be performed in the Philippines but is no longer considered legally binding, such as for the vigil of the Immaculate Conception (except when the vigil falls on a Sunday), and on 23 December, the day before the vigil of the Nativity.
