Unit 2: Motion Learning Competency At the end of this lesson, the learners should be able to compare and contrast translational and rotational motion in terms of their respective linear and angular quantities Learning Targets In this lesson, you should be able to do the following: ● Define and differentiate between scalar (distance) and vector (displacement) quantities in translational motion. ● Calculate average and instantaneous velocity using appropriate equations and units. ● Analyze acceleration in one-dimensional motion using mathematical representations and graphs. ● Solve problems involving uniform and non-uniform translational motion in real-world contexts. Learn About It When we observe the world around us, we often describe how things move without using scientific terms. We say someone "walked far" or "moved fast," but what do these actually mean in physics? How do these ideas allow us to make sense of motion and movement? Translational Motion Basics Translational motion is the movement of an object from one location to another in a straight or curved path, but in this lesson we focus on straight-line (or linear) motion. This type of motion happens in one dimension—forward or backward, left or right, up or down. Unlike rotational motion where an object spins around an axis, translational motion means every part of the object moves the same distance in the same direction. Distance and Displacement 2.1.
