Unit 1 1.2 Fluid Properties
Fluid Properties Density or Mass density • is defined as the ratio of mass of the fluid to its volume • It is denoted by the symbol ‘ρ’ ρ = mass volume • SI Unit – kg/m3 • density of the liquid are considered as constant • density of the gases with the variation of pressure and temperature • Density of water is 1000 kg/m3
Fluid Properties Specific weight/ weight density • is defined as the ratio of weight of the fluid to its volume • It is denoted by the symbol ‘w’ • SI Unit – N/m3 • Specific weight of water is 9810 N/m3 w = weight volume = mass×acceleration due to gravity volume = m×g v = ρg
Fluid Properties Specific volume • is defined as the volume occupied by fluid per unit mass • SI Unit –m3/ kg • Specific weight of water is 9810 N/m3 specific volume = volume mass = 1 mass volume = 1 ρ Commonly applied to gases
