1 Mathematics Year 4 Practice 4017c Numerical Reasoning 4004b
2 The Learning focus of Practice 17 is Measuring 1&2, Perimeters and Areas 1&2, Problem Solving 1&2 and Time Yourself Test Page 2 Measuring 1 \\ Which weight do we think would be a reasonable weight for an egg, remembering we are not finding the mass of a dinosaurs’ egg!! Choose the most sensible unit of measurement for each item: Important Information. We use different units of measurement to measure different objects. Grams and kilograms measure the weight of objects or mass. Centimetre’s, metres and kilometre’s measure length. Litres and millilitres measure the volume of liquid.
3 Important Information: When using a ruler to measure in metric units, choose the side of the ruler that measures in centimetres (cm). In the metric system, each unit of measurement is divided into ten smaller units of measurement. The numbers represent centimetres, and the lines between the numbers represent millimetres. When measuring an object always line it up carefully and measure it from zero. (0) As we can see below, the pencil measures 17.6cm. How accurate do we think John is? For example, can an apple weigh 2kilograms?? Why or why not? What do we think the average mass of an apple weighs?? (between 70-100grams) What do we think the average mass of an egg is? (refer to Q1)
4 Page 3 (Converting measurements to units) Convert kilograms into grams for example: convert these weights into grams. (Hint: multiply by 1000) Let’s practice converting these weights below to grams. 0.04kg 0.1kg 0.001kg Convert cm to m. 100cm=1m For example, let’s convert 4.2 m to centimetres. 4.2m x100=420cm When converting litres to millilitres we need to multiply by 1000 as 1000 ml is equivalent to 1 litre.
