1 Mathematics Year 4 Practice 4015c
2 The focus of Practice 15 is on Fraction and Percentages, Measuring Problems 1, 2 and 3 General Maths and Time Yourself Test. Page 2 Fractions and Percentages Divide the denominator to find one portion of the fraction and then multiply by the numerator. For example: 4/7 of 49 Step 1 find 1 /7 of 49 =7 Then multiply the 7 by 4 = 28 Question 2 Worded fraction problem. Let’s solve this example together. Sarah entered a 100-word story competition. She wrote her story over two evenings. On the first evening, she wrote 6 /10 and on the second evening she wrote the rest. a. How many words did she write on the first evening? b. How many words did she write on the second evening and what fraction was this?
3 Page 3 Measuring problem 1 A story to introduce us to Metric Units Wow, I just flew in from planet Micron. It was a long flight, but well worth it to get to spend time with you! My name is Maggie in your language (but you couldn't pronounce my real name!) When I first arrived, I couldn't understand how you measure things, but my friend Tom taught me all about measurement, and I am going to share with you everything he taught me. The first thing Tom told me was that you can measure things using two different systems: Metric and Imperial. Today is my day to learn Metric, because in Australia we use Metric measurement. Tom says that if I understand 10, 100, and 1000 then I will have a very easy time learning the metric system. I wish I had ten fingers! First, we are going to look at mass- Tom tells me that to understand mass, I should know these three terms: • Grams • Kilograms • Tonnes
4 Page 3 Measuring Problems 1 continued Question 1 Important information: 1000 grams = 1 kilogram and 1000 kilograms = 1 tonne If we remember kilo means 1000 then it is easy for us to convert grams to kilograms. For example: Question 1a) 1⁄2 kg = 500grams + 3/4 kg = 750grams. Total = 1250 grams To solve these questions, we need to find the fractional amount of 680 grams. For example: Question 3c) what is 1 /5 of 680g. 680÷5=136 Question 4 Let’s look at the anchor chart below. If a pound converts to approximately 450 grams and 1 kilogram is approximately 2.2 pounds, can we now calculate if a pound is slightly more less than half a kilogram.
