MOVING CHARGES AND MAGNETISM
VELOCITY SELECTOR
Motion in combined electric and magnetic fields: Consider the case in which electric and magnetic fields are perpendicular to each other and also perpendicular to the velocity of the particle. Velocity Selector We know that the charge q moving with velocity v in presence of both electric and magnetic fields experiences a force. What is a velocity selector? A velocity selector is an accelerator mass spectrometry to select particles based on their speed It is composed of orthogonal electric and magnetic fields such that particle with the correct speed will be unaffected while other particles will be deflected.
